I forgot about Flags of our fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima. There are two movies that have really effected me by bringing home my own experiances. Saving private ryan, not for the opening scene because I never had it that bad, but there's a scene where they're walking and there's an arty barrage going off in the distance. Still gives me chills when I see it. Flags of Our Fathers. The scene where ira Hayes meets the mother of a friend killed in combat. He can't say anything, just hug her. I lost it in the theatre when I first saw that and it still gets to me. Freind of mine's girlfriend brought his newborn son by our unit to intoduce him to us. He hadn't got the chance to meet his son because he'd been killed in combat. That scene really hits home. |

The recent Australian movie Kokoda. link According to a couple of friends of my father, veterans of the original battle; it caught the atmosphere of the battle perfectly. The first 10 minutes of Saving Private Ryan have to be up there too. |

I forgot about the Winter War. The artillery barrage at the end was brutal. It seemed to go on and on. I play the movie when are doing WWII games. When that barrage starts we all sort of stop what we are doing and just watch. It's like watching an accident. You want to look away but you cant. |

The Cruel Sea Battle of Britain Zulu Tora, Tora, Tora. As to Braveheart it could not have been more historical inaccurate if it had featured plasticine dog and been retitled "William Wallce and Gromit"

Come and See was certainly the most brutal war movie I've ever seen. However, my votes go to Battle of Algiers (documentary feel, even handed and down to Earth). Battleground (1949 movie about the seige of Bastogne). 84 Charlie Mopic (Indie Vietnam war movie) All Quiet on the Western Front (1930 and very visceral. Still holds up well). |
