I've decided to start in the Renaissance with the ECW, and am looking for rules recommendations. I plan to use 6mm figures, and want fairly sizable units – so units of 4+ bases. What's out there? |

You might try Polemos, its designed for 6mm, not sure how many bases to a unit though link Others WRG, DBR, Warhammer ECW – typical of their 'rules systems', love or hate them! 1644 – play quite nicely but casualties a bit high for my taste, I did hear that they were adapted from Marlburian rules which might explain it Forlorn Hope – Possibly the best 'period flavour' but fairly intricate rules Pike & Shotte – if you like Black Powder and/or Hail Caesar Perfect Captain and Regiment of Foot – heard good things about these but no personal experience. |

I have Polemos and it uses single bases

Make a bigger base. Polemos is good. Eric |

I like Forlorn Hope. Its a bit of a to figure out some of the rules at first but it provides a good "big battle" game. The rules allow for varying ratios. Usually somewhere between 10:1 and 50:1. But, at 6mm you could go with a 1:1 figure/man ratio without changing the mechanics and it would look great. |

Charlie Wessencraft's "With Pike and Shot." Old school wargame rules. has some interesting ideas in there. Featherstone if you like hit/save systems that he is so famous for. Cavaliers and Roundheads. A game system similar to the old TSR Chainmail rules system. |

Probably Polemos with 6mm. No one mentioned 'Bloody Kingdoms' so thought I would for completeness sake. |

Neil Thomas' Pike and Shot rules (from Intro to Wargaming) – cavalry units are 4 stands, foot are 6 stands. Designed for 15mm, they use 40mm wide stands. Cram 6mm on the same stands and proceed. |

Renaissance Principles of War Again, a single base, but it is a big one. 90mm by 30mm. Cheers, JohnG |

Field of Glory: Renaissance is a good set. Pike & Shot units are mostly 6 stands |

Mark, Please check out our "house rules" for ECW, Charge yr Pikes! link . They are designed for 15mm figures using eight bases per unit (4 pike and 4 shotte), but you can easily substitute 6mm figures with whatever base size you want. Be sure and click on the "Go to Unit Organization" button at the bottom of the rules. If you are interested, contact me and I can send you the base sizes we use. Battle reports from a 2004 campaign can be viewed here: link link link link And a 2008 game's report: link Jim |

Jim: Those look intriguing, thanks! I think 8 bases packed with 6mm will look just grand

Another vote for Forelorn Hope here. I have used them with 6mm and it worked well. They are a decent set of rules and cover most things needed for the ECW including Montrose's campaigns in the Highlands. |

Regiment of Foote or Polemos. They play very differently but are both fun. |
