Hey all, we played a couple of games of 1st Edition Warzone Saturday.
I have to say it's such a blast. I've found that if players approach the game with a little sense of fair play(and not use The Brotherhood, LOL), the game plays out well.
I recommend people pick up a set of the rules and supplements and give it a go. Lots of room for customization for custom builds.

robertsjf14 Nov 2012 9:59 a.m. PST

Capt Flash, ever tried 3rd ed (Ultimate Warzone)? It's very similar as far as gameplay but addresses the issues you mentioned.

doublesix6614 Nov 2012 11:12 a.m. PST

Yep a good game I've played it since it 1st came out as Robertsjf said 3rd edition is good too.

I take it you haven't played with some min/maxers yet we banned one combination years ago it was an imperial hero on a bike with a special weapon I can't remember the exact specifics but he basically moved and if he killed someone could move again etc so in the 1st turn wiping out 1/2 the opposing force ..

billthecat14 Nov 2012 11:15 a.m. PST

I always found the rules a little tedious, esp. the 'each unit member finishes his activation before the next'… This is a problem for squads. as each member decides what to do based on the preformance of the previous: trooper a shoots and misses, trooper b shoots and kills, then trooper c can move forward, etc… also, there is the whole 'I jump over the wall, shoot my gun, and jump back behind the wall' syndrome (most models have 3 actions, most character models have more)…combine that with individual trooper activation (above) and you get a very silly and drawn-out activation sequence. Just my preference, of course.
Still, this would work for 'squad level' actions where each 'activating unit' is an individual combatant.
And, of course, it is still superior to 40K 7th edition…

Yeah, I like 1st edition too. I tend to use the fast play variant listed in the back of the rules. That eliminates much of what Billthecat describes. It also eliminates hide. Characters can only have one special item and it can not be repeated between characters.

I agree that 3rd edition takes a lot from 1st and improves it. However, I did not like how the forces were restructured under 3rd. The attempt to force players to buy new figs was not a good thing. Sgt's in previous editions were replaced by different armed figs. The books layout is also a big issue. 1st has a certain charm and I enjoy it. I just picked up some Brotherhood recently. grin

Thanks,

John

I used to own 3rd edition but I was seriously put off by the editing errors. No excuse for that book's level of errors. And as John says, the way they merged the older figures wasn't cool.
I use FUBAR for my quick play and really like WZ1 for the meatier rules.
Back in the day we had some min/maxers such as one guy who tooled up his Keeper and Mystics with cybernetic arm, subdermal armor, combat medic and Nimrod autocannon.
We treated General Armory weapons as separate from Special Equipment.  Nothing like a teleporting, super elite, HMG Tank who can heal wounds. I did manage to trick him with my Pretorian Stalker throwing his Keeper off of the board and out of the game though.
Our group included Les Robertson who worked pretty closely with the Heartbreaker guys. And yes, they came up with the Barking Spiders one night out at a bar, from what Les told me…
After someone "butt-sneezed"…

John Leahy Sponsoring Member of TMP14 Nov 2012 12:42 p.m. PST

Yeah, Fubar is a good set of rules. I haven't tried the WZ variant yet. We don't use anything outside of the general armory for characters.

3rd edition was sloppy. Considering how long the rules took to release there was no excuse for the poor work done.

I still enjoy checking out the Rats Nest for Warzone 1st goodness. I still pick up figs every so often. I got over a 100 Bauhaus figs a few months ago. I love the Warzone Universe. I wish the game would be picked up again but hold out no hope it will happen.

Thanks,

John

Capt Flash14 Nov 2012 1:02 p.m. PST

I have a game or two tomorrow as well. I'm going to field a hot ninja/Meka/chanbara samurai list.
1 Samurai squad with Dragonfire HMG,
1 Squad of Shinobi, 1Meka, and one Demonhunter- subdermal armor, command helm, combat medic, 4 Ki powers, Gehenna Puker and his Dragontooth(?) sword. Hopefully I'll roll well on the Ki powers list.

blackscribe14 Nov 2012 1:57 p.m. PST

I enjoyed that game, of course, I also played Brotherhood. Holy Psychic Ninjas -- good.

robertsjf14 Nov 2012 2:07 p.m. PST

Fair enough then! I wasn't as bothered by the editing issues as I was by opponents that had difficulty not taking the most abusive loadouts they could in 1st ed.

CmdrKiley14 Nov 2012 2:29 p.m. PST

Great to hear people playing Warzone again. Always had a good time playing it.

Hmmmm…..I was just convinced to break out Urban War this weekend and try the 2nd Edition Rules. Now I'm feeling tempted to play some Warzone.

Capt Flash14 Nov 2012 4:32 p.m. PST

Yeah, Warzone. But at least Urban War is in the same family, LOL.

Skipper14 Nov 2012 5:01 p.m. PST

Back when 40K was all the rage, I just about converted the loacal store over to Warzone….early second edition…but then the releases got broken and the game went under. Its a shame as we really liked it.

Third edition never drew anyone's attention mainly due to the massive figures released with it.

i used to love the Wolfbairne…still due for that matter, though I used to loose regularly with them. Sucked being a CC unit in a firearm world.

robertsjf15 Nov 2012 8:11 a.m. PST

Would it be too much of a derail if I asked for opinions of UW2 from my fellow Warzone vets?

John Leahy Sponsoring Member of TMP15 Nov 2012 1:06 p.m. PST

In general or specifics about the rules? The rules are a free download online along with every other Warzone publication.

@ robertsjf

Are you asking for an opinion on Urban War 2nd Edition or Warzone Ultimate Edition?

I think you're asking about Urban War, but I don't want to hijack the thread too much so I'll keep it quick. I haven't played it yet, but from reading the rules, I'd say the biggest change has been to remove the Lockfire Order. I think this will actually speed up play,a common complaint of the original UW rules was the Pre-Orders Phase took so long. So essentially now models will only activate normally, given a Snapfire Order, or may interrupt after passing a Command Test, when given an Over Watch Order.

There appears to be some changes in the Who Strikes first in Close Combat rules. However, these may simply be some consolidation of modifiers into some fixed numbers based on the unit type and it's Caliber.

Capt Flash15 Nov 2012 1:56 p.m. PST

No problem about asking Robertsjf, buy I can't answer anything as I played one game of it.
So today's game played out well. Lotsa of cinematic action and great swings of advantage to both sides throughout the game. Mishima pulled out a narrow victory against a well lead Dark Legion force.
You guys need to pull this set of rules out soon!

Capt Flash15 Nov 2012 1:58 p.m. PST

Sorry for the typos above…
Does anyone know the status of the Warzone rules? Who may have the rights to them, etc?

CmdrKiley15 Nov 2012 3:18 p.m. PST

Paradox Entertainment owns the Mutant Chronicles property.

I don't know if FFG still has their license. I imagine they are not up for renewing it as that last game was dropped like a lead Bleeped text.

They pulled 2 things off the bat (initially)that killed it:
Scale Shift
Collectable

They killed collectable but the damage was done. That and the movie didn't win that emmy that paradox was banking on.

Capt Flash16 Nov 2012 4:15 p.m. PST

Personally I enjoyed the movie for the cheap sci-fi action it was. I also enjoyed watching Ghosts Of Mars, which from what I've heard is what John Carpenter intended for Mutant Chronicles.
I pulled out a unit of Cartel Agents, two squads of Blood Berets and another Razide to primer and paint this week.

John Leahy Sponsoring Member of TMP16 Nov 2012 6:09 p.m. PST

Yeah, I enjoyed the movie for what it was. The initial combat scenes were pretty cool between Bauhaus and either Imperial or Capitol.

A favorite game of mine was when my oldest son Sean played his 1st time. He had a load of Undead Legionnaires. A few Razides and a squad of Necromutants.

I had Cybertronic. I had a few squads of Chassuers and an Attila or two.

He slaughtered me. All those crappy Undead boys kept rolling hits.

It was a good time for both of us though.
grin

Thanks,

John

robertsjf20 Nov 2012 7:39 a.m. PST

I'm not saying I didn't enjoy the movie, I'm just saying it wasn't the advertising piece paradox needed it to be.

Capt Flash20 Nov 2012 9:57 a.m. PST

LOL, I'd have to agree. It boggles the mind how some people can get what should be plainly obvious completely wrong. FFG is another one. Why would they, after all the hype and Joe Gaming Public's oft posted desire for a new 28mm system would they go the route they did with Mutant Chronicles? And yes, we know the "reasons"… But still, plainly obvious people in general wanted 28mm.

Capt Flash25 May 2017 10:13 p.m. PST

Some serious thread necromancy happening.
I have gotten a game of 1st edition Warzone in at least once a week for the past month and change. I have gaitten a couple of fellas painting some old Warzone minis and Insckrdd four squads of painted Bauhaus minis. Just gotta get my hands on some individuals and convert a Bauhaus GT.

John Leahy Sponsoring Member of TMP01 Apr 2022 12:00 p.m. PST

Well, one thread necromancy deserves another! Anyone done anything lately Warzone related. I sorted some figs and glued some together. Read some of the 1st edition mags too. Boy I really liked reading them! I can remeber when each new one came out and rules questions were asked and answered. The Tin Soldier in Dayton, Ohio had a pretty large group playing Warzone then.

Thanks

John

Thread necromancy Pt 2
@ John Leahy- Ha! just saw your post
I just finished up a squad of Sea Lions and hero, two medics, a Dr Diana, and I'm finishing up the first of two squads, plus heroes, of Sunset Strikers.
Next will likely be a full squad of Capitol Heavy Infantry, plus hero.
All 1st edition figures, of course.
