Core set is $40. USD

Two TIE Fighters and one X Wing Fighter is $45. USD

With the core set you get extra dice and maneuver templates as well as tokens and damage cards.

With the expansions you get some unique pilots.

Is there anything else you get in the expansions? Otherwise, if one is simply buying extra TIEs and X Wings and not worried about unique pilots, the core seems to be a better value.

That is my thinking as well…..

I thought you got some unique pilots in the core set as well.

I was going to buy some extra ships too but went for the core set for the extra stuff.

I bought two Starter boxes and it makes for a great game. Better value for sure. I'm waiting for the next wave before I buy any more.

For the extra $5 USD it is IMHO worth getting those extra cards at least once. It depends how many ships you want at the end of the day.

I ended up canceling my online order from Amazon and bought core set at local BN with a great coupon for $24 USD including tax…woohoo!

I noticed in the squadron building rules they recommend 100 points as a standard. That seems to work out to about three typical fully loaded rebel fighters or six TIE fighters with all with average pilots.

I also noticed that the text suggests the components in the core set are likely insufficient to handle a 100 point game.

So at the very least a second core set seems valuable to boost basic forces 66% of the way towards that 100 points and to provide enough components to handle that many ships.

It should be fairly easy to find somebody who is selling a set of the cards that come with the expansion X-Wing and TIE fighter (heck, come to think of it I have several extra sets of each--hmm). With that in mind the starter set would certainly be your best bet.

Of course, you'll still need to buy Y-Wings and Advanced TIEs in the expansions but they are both great ships that add a LOT to the game so that shouldn't be too big a problem for you.

For TIEs and X-Wings, getting copies of the core is the best deal, but you will want at least one copy of each fighter for the extra pilot and equipment cards.

For the Rebels, you need an absolute minimum of three ships to field 100 points. Therefor, if you are looking to field 100 points, I'd say two starters and either an X-Wing or a Y-Wing are your best value to field both sides.

The Empire needs an absolute minimum of 3 ships to play at 100 points, but in order to do so they will only field 97 points and all three ships have to be TIE Advanced fighters.

So I say two starters, a Y-Wing or a X-Wing, and a TIE Advanced would be your best all around choice to start and be able to play 100 points on either side. Of course that leaves you with very little variety in your forces. I'd look to adding the two other ships as soon as possible. That will leave you with a decent amount of flexibility and fun.

The expansions also come with addition abilities and equipment cards, which you won't have access to if you don't purchase the expansions. This is another good reason to purchase the expansions.

Hey Nazrat… I'd be interested in getting a set of those cards off you hands…

Richard, one of my buddies just said he wanted them. If he changes his mind you are first on the list!

On the official forum I've been reading a lot about TIE swarm tactics working well in 100 point games. This usually means 8 TIEs vs 3-4 rebel ships. A little OT but probably relevant for those seeking to build a TIE swarm at a reasonable price.

I should also note another benefit to extra core set: extra dice. Expansion dice seems to be nearly $10 USD locally or approaching that online with shipping. That's about 1/3 to 1/4 of the core set cost depending on discounts.
