I like to play a varied selection of wargames. A lot are one offs but I try to have an underlying project in each period to collect miniatures, research and play the odd game in as the mood takes me.

One experience was not so good. For 25mm Ancients and Ancient naval I decided to concentrate on the Peloponnesian Wars. This is the period that I have done most reserch on, buying a number of books and trawwling the internet. After about 2 years of this I came across a book that lists all the land battles of the period with description of the battles themselves, estimates of forces etc. I felt that a lot of my time in the previous 2 years on the project had been pretty much wasted.

How dies this relate to WW2 avaiation? Well I have decided that my air gaming project is going to be based on the FAA with an attempt to refight one acction from each month they have flown and engaged in air to air combat, with the aim of making the refights as varied as possible.

Having started my research and made some small progress I suddenly thought – I wonder if there is a book or other reference out there which has a lot of this information in?

So my question is does anyone know of such a reference? I have come across a lot of books / internet sources on campaigns or about particular planes or squadrons but it is a slow process to pick up one account of dogfighting here and another one there.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Posted under WW2 because this should cover 95% of what I am after – other than that I only know of the one time in Korea and also the Falklandes of course.

Another proviso – I am only looking at carrier based operations
