Was a bit turned off of CY6 for the sole reason you are required to write down your maneuvers.

Any good Korean War air rules that are on the simple/playable side but still realistic?

Thanks.

Ive got a some sabers and Mig-15s sitting around doing nothing.

Bag the Hun from TFL with the jet age supplement would work.

or

Find the Yankee Air Pirates web site, the have free rules based on the Mustangs! boardgame from Avalon Hill (I still love that game!). Oh yeah, the rules are in 4 sets covering WWI to Modern.

Why not try CY6 but without plotting the moves?

Use the turn sequence as is for determining who moves first, ie Green first up to Ace, and then when it's your turn to move just select a move. Put a time limit on it in a group game session of say, 30secs? Works for me.

Also speeds the game up.

Bag The MiG would be ideal, as Dynaman8789 said.

You could also have a look at MiG Alley, available from Tumbling Dice. It's designed for 1/600 scale planes but the combat bit would work well with larger scale models.

I read the title of this thread as (Korean war-dog) (fight[ing] rules). I thought "wow, that's a little … specific."

Heckman26 Oct 2012 12:23 p.m. PST

Second the comment about using CY6 without the plots. Simply apply a Fighting Wings / Airpower / AirWar C21 / Blue Sky Initiative approach of rolling 2d6 + Aircrew skill and move in order of lowest to highest rolls.

boggler26 Oct 2012 12:39 p.m. PST

There's also a Korean War variant for AirwarC21, which might tick your boxes.

Panzergruppe26 Oct 2012 12:52 p.m. PST

You could use wings of war/glory. There are some home baked conversions for using Migs and Sabres but you'll have to search places like BGG yourself to find the stuff. Wow/g fills the criteria of fun, simple and challenging IMHO

Clash of Sabres is very good, and doesn't use hexmats.

Movement is based upon initiative die rolls, with low rollers moving first.

Note, you do need to keep track of airspeeds, and the effects of maneuvers on that normally, but if running friendly, simple games, you can choose to ignore that, and/or simplify the process a bit.

It's a great set for dogfighting, and has stats and rules for Korea through the early 1970's. I've got some unofficial stats to extend them, so you can run sorties in the Falklands, and Iran-Iraq Conflicts too.

Add in Shipwreck, which I also have, and you can run aircraft attacks on shipping as well. I use Clash for the air-to-air combat and movement of the jets, and Shipwreck for AA and SAM fire, and air-to-ship bombing runs.

Works great.

Thanks all. Im going to give CY6 a second look since Im intetested in their Arab Israeli War book too.

There's a set of rules over at Wargame Vault (or at least used to be) called MiG Hunters that's tailored for the early jet period.

Found it:

I have it, haven't tried it.

Not a bad price! Thanks.

The miniatures home-brew of the old Mustangs rules has a Korean variant and it uses movement makers instead of written orders.

Btw, I caved and bought CY6 Jet Age along with the Korean and Arab sup's. They were all discounted at Last square.

GeoffQRF30 Oct 2012 5:01 a.m. PST

I just picked up Mig Hunters (Korea), along with Hunters in the Sky (WW2) and Mach Speed Hunters (modern).

I looked at CY6, but:

(a) It looks a little too complex for my kids, and the casual gamers I am hoping to introduce to aerial gaming – same issue for my own set, Clash of Sabres!; and

(b) It uses hexes, and I prefer to work without hexes

The turn system of Mig Hunters is really a hex system without hexes, but as it is a clock face system there are 12 faces rather than only 6. :-)

We haven't played a full-on game yet, but my 4 year old is getting the hang of 1/2 move, 2 point turn, 1/2 move, 2 point turn, shoot at daddy, so that's got to be a good thing! :-)

Funny mention kids Geoff. Im hoping to learn CY6 well enough to teach my nephew to play for Christmas.

GeoffQRF30 Oct 2012 9:32 a.m. PST

My 10 year old can handle most things, but the 4 year old just likes to get all the aeroplanes out (and the 1/300 tanks). I'm just on the phase of teaching him basic move, and which dice to roll.

It's all educational – he has to work out which ones are higher than 4 or 5, and be able to add modifiers of 1 or 2 :-)

Rocketeer30 Oct 2012 10:42 a.m. PST

I've created set of Korean War rules that started as AirWar C21 and morphed. No hexes, use altitude, and I've added ground support.

Contact me at javaguy]at[sbcglobal.net and I'll send them to you.

Sorry, forgot to mention nephew is 12. He's pretty sharp so should be able to pick it up (if his Uncle can learn it first!).

Nelclaret14 Nov 2012 9:17 a.m. PST

Instant Thunder is a set of quick-play jet combat rules that includes stats for Mig15/F-86 et al. No hexes, no plotting, no dice and although abstract, the results seem to come out pretty close.

Have a Google round the 'net – there are at least three sites where you can download them. The price is excellent – nothing!

No Hex air combat is great, but not a big issue to me. Ive played CY6 a cpl times, good game but a bit complex. Not what I would call a 'simple relaxing pick up game'.

I think using the card like system for WoW/WoG is better for simplicity and fun and it would work really well for Non-hex games.
It was a bummer that they didnt do a Korean period game / miniatures. Both WW I and WW II looked great.
