Most appear to have carried only one standard. I've only seen a single ref. to a Bn. carrying two. Of the known patterns there doesn't appear to be distinct Royal and Regimental type of designs. Most were made by the town/city were they were raised. Cliff |

It is my understanding that the third link down in Armand's post was a generic design to be used by the regular Field Battalions. The original is white but I have assumed that they were actually in the appropriate facing colour (and for wargame purposes I have put the battalion name around the central design). The fourth one (Gifhorn Landwehr Battalion) would seem to have actually been at Waterloo. It's colour of buff could have indicated Gifhorn's facing colour. The Osnabruck Landwehr colour (5th & 6th links) would seem to be post Waterloo. I suspect that any flags carried by Hanoverian Landwehr battalions would have been locally produced. I have made my wargame ones with a Hanoverian white horse on one side and a town badge on the other. Rod |

According to Keith Over's 'Flags and Standards of the Napoleonic Wars' the Field Battalion Hoya flag shown above was carried on a blue staff (whether that is the same staff as in the photograph I don't know). He also mentions the flag of the Landwehr Battalion Gifhorn which he says measured 100cm by 180cm, was yellow and fringed. The central design featured an oak tree behind a silver, crowned leaping horse of Hanover, facing the fly. Beneath was an inscription of which the last word was Gifhorn but the rest is unknown. He says the staff was blue with yellow cords and tassels but goes on to say it may have been presented after 1815. |

Many years ago (1980s) I visited Schloss Marionbourg, south of Hannover on a hill overlooking the River Leine. This was the Hanoverian Royal Summer Palace. In the entrance hall were hanging many KGL flags and most of those Hanoverian ones illustrated in the various posts above. Sadly most were sold at auction a few years ago. Rod |
