Minifigs have finally got pictures of the French from their 15mm French Revolution range on the website. link

A few of the figures are in the over-active 'lunge' poses which I am not too keen on but the vast majority look very good indeed:

I used mainly Minifigs for my refight of Wellington's First Battle, some photos are posted on my blog; link

For more untidy revolutionaries I have used the Magister Militum range, which work well with the Minifigs ones. However for British Generals I had to use the Wessex AMI range, I also needed to goto to Magister Militum for suitable limbers and drivers for the British guns.

Hi Gary, that's a really good-looking game. Funnily enough I am planning to get some Magister Militum figures to mix with my Minifigs revolutionaries. Generally I like all figures in a unit to be in the same pose but for the ragged revolutionaries I think some variety is a must.

Just out of interest why aren't the Minifigs drivers suitable for this period? I notice they do a 6 Horse team and limber and drivers in both 1790s and later uniform? link

Hello,

Yes I have several of those limbers nicely painted up and included them in the early photos for my book.

I have had to learn a lot about the British artillery of the 1790's in the last couple of years. The Minifigs 1790's limber is based on the 1788 Desaguliers limber, which, as far as we know to date, was only given to the new horse artillery companies. These companies were not deployed overseas in the 1793-5 campaigns in Europe, which are my main focus of interest, hence my comment. Consequently my battalion guns for the Boxtel game use limbers provided by Magister Militum, link and the drivers from the same range; link This combination is closer to the Congreve 1777 single draft limber used by the British Foot artillery well into the Napoleonic period.

A good source for this information is Napoleonic Artillery by Dawson, Dawson & Summerfield, which is available at bargain prices now. Stephen Summerfield has been a great help to me in the learning process. Hopefully he will correct me if this reply is inaccurate or incomplete.

Having said all of the above, I am not entirely convinced that the matter is entirely closed, more archive research is probably worthwhile.

Thanks Garry,

I don't know much about the British army in the revolutionary wars but I've bought a few figures to paint up just because I like the uniforms so much. I will look out for Dr Summerfield's book. I've got C.E. Franklin's book on the subject sitting on my shelf but I'm yet to get round to reading it.

P.78 is the relevant page in Franklin's book. Yes, it is definitely worth getting Napoleonic Artillery, in addition. The Magister Militum limber I referred to lacks the ammunition box as it is a Valiere type, but it is probably close enough for our purposes.

Garry
