These are nearing completion. If you've missed them on Relic Facebook, here they are. Some minor changes since this WIP pic was taken.

They look great, Mike. I like the way the riders lean a bit forward on the mounts. Best, Dean

Don't forget the swappable heads! ;) :)

Seriously though, nice work!

Very nice Mike – good to see progress being made.

I can see yet another Seleucid cataphract unit on the way.

Looking very nice, Mike, especially the horses and armour.

Very Very nice. Should at least one have a facemask helmet as on the Pergamon Reliefs???

I very much like the sculpting on these. I do find some other sculpts/manufactures in this period just too chunky these days with fat heads and hands.
Gtreat work and nice flow.

RelliK19 Oct 2012 6:39 a.m. PST

Roy, they are all face masks :^) It is not the first time that has been mentioned. Let me know if I am missing something here.

The horses lammelar has been redone 2-3 times over. It's tedious!

Simon, a fine primer is even more important for these. A shotty primer would just frost over the detail. I would recommend Tamiya fine surface primer, base cotes and washes to pick out the details before adding highlights. Some highlights can be applied before washes as well. Course you can go wherever you like, just my take.

Colin, you appeal more to these proportions. It's obvious because your a fan of Ebobs work with Cutting Edge. Some people actually like cute, chubby chaps. My first two sculpts: Military Man General and Gallic Chieftain are 6 heads high, 29mm. When pointed out by Tom Meirer what I was doing I tried for 7HH. I admit, I wasn't sure exactly what I was looking for in the beginning.

Dean, Rassi, Blue and Garry, thanks for your comments too!

Sorry I left you out, my bad!

Ha Ha, they look very like faces!!! I think facemasks are rather bigger than the face , well after all they have to go around it! and they are a bit flatter.
But now you say it what I thought were cheekpieces are actually the beards chased onto the metal.

The last is a bit on the Angus McBride super realism side.
This one is from Ancient Warfare magazine and I think they capture the kit shown on the relief perfectly

Roy can you edit your comments to just posting the pictures here?

Right click the picture you want to post.
The box will open up, choose Properties at the bottom of the list.
Under properties copy the full web URL that ends in Jpg. and paste it here.

The picture will then be post here.

Mike

Ps you have an hour to edit your comments…

The relief your talking about is an artists rendition. Mr Mcbrides work is a rendition of a rendition. Doesn't make it right or wrong. Of course my sculpts here are a rendition too. The face masks can't be flat as they would not wrap the face properly and leave the neck more vulnerable. Just my take as a sheet metal worker/sculpter. Oh and in 28mm the contour of a face mask on the face would NOT be noticeable in these proportions.

Still appreciate your input and perspective Roy!

Mike

PS Igors artwork is great and Mcbrides well appreciated too!

Lewisgunner19 Oct 2012 8:27 a.m. PST

Hi Mike, When I click on the picture it just doesn't come up with 'properties' if it did I could post the picture here, not the link. I suspect that it is protected in some way.
I agree that they are renditions of renditions, but I'd urge you to look at Roman face mask helmets. There we can see that the mask is fuller and rounder than a face…. and these old metalworkers were making items for a man to wear in battle or at the least a long parade exercise.
I made the same point about McBride, and he does tend to make wide, stocky representations, but then the other Miniature Warfare representation gets it perfectly.
Roy:-))

The above has some Thracian helmets with face masks. I still cannot get a pic of the helmet on the Pergamon altar pediment.
Your pic above is excellent and rather fuller in the face than I had thought!!

At Last!!

Gecoren19 Oct 2012 10:28 a.m. PST

It is hard to tell from an single photograph and even harder to judge without knowing the range.

Fortunately Mike sent us some samples of his Companions which we reviewed in WSS 62. Compared with the heads on the Companions these Cataphract are more substantial and IMHO fit the range. Any bigger and they'd look odd with the others.
