I've played or read every version of D&D over the years, and they all have their strengths:

Classic and Advanced D&D (up to second edition) are perfect for those players and with strong improvisational skills and 'think on their feet' muscles.

Third edition and 3.5 are perfect for those players and DM's who want total customization of their characters and monsters.

4th edition is awesome for those players who want a two-fisted 'pulp fantasy' experience, free of the endless pseudo-Tolkien baggage that clutters up fantasy literature these days.

But here's a man who sums it up better than I ever could:

I have a soft spot for B/X D&D because I started with those rules. But both editions of AD&D are great. I never cared for the Player's Option books, though.

Been rereading B/X recently after, oh, thirty years. It's a really good game! I'm going to start a campaign soon (hi, Reaper Bones and Dwarven Forge!) and play it as written. We skipped/ignored/didn't understand the significance of much of the core dynamics in that game way back when and I think it'll be great for my group.

WotC is re-releasing the older versions of D&D again, in PDF format. My hope is that they will release PDF's of every version. It really won't cost them anything, and they will make money off of the downloads.

With the release of all of the versions, and all of the supplements, D&D will likely experience a bit of a revival. I was selectively purchasing/downloading copies of the older stuff, classic modules, and books, bit by bit. Then they pulled everything before they released D&D Ver. 4, to avoid competing with themselves, I suspect. Now they are putting out new, improved scans of the older materials: D&D Classics.

Whichever version you prefer, there should be just about everything ever printed for your version available again… Enjoy! Cheers!
