If you want to see a contemporary depiction of Bavarians in greatcoats, here's a Kobell painting of the siege of Cosel, c.1808. It's mostly a cavalry escort for a staff officer, but you can see some infantry in greatcoats to the left – the uniform would not have changed much for 1809, or 1812 except that the pack would be a proper backpack rather than the tournister style worn on the left hip. You need to go to the Web Gallery of Art, click on "Enter Here" to go to the home page; then on the artists' index at the bottom of the page, click on "K" for Kobell, then scroll down to and click on "Kobell, Wilhelm von" (1766-1853). wga.hu Something a little more "folksy" art-wise, but also contemporary:
Hope that helps. |
