One of the few good historical accounts of something resembling a Viking warrior woman we have is Freydis in "The Greenlanders Saga."
"Freydis came out and saw them retreating. She shouted
to them, " Why are you running away from these puny fel-
lows, fine men as you are! It looks to me as if you should
be able to cut them down like cattle* If I had weapons, I
think I could fight better than any of you! "
They paid no attention to what she was saying. She tried
to follow, but had trouble keeping up with them, for she
was with child. She went after them into the woods, and
the savages started towards her. In front of her lay a dead
man, Thorbrand, Snorri's son, whose head had been
crushed by a flat rock. Beside him lay his sword, and she
picked it up to defend herself. When the savages ap-
proached, she pulled out her breasts from under her dress
and slapped them with the naked sword. At this the sav-
ages were so appalled that they ran down to their boats
and rowed away."
I've been painting Skraelings to fight my Vikings, and would like to game this battle (read about it here link ), and that brings me to the issue of modeling a figure for Freydis.
Now to the best of my knowledge, nobody makes a 28mm figure of a pregnant Viking woman exposing her breasts and waving a sword (can't think why not 8^) )So, I get to convert something, and the question becomes "How far should I go in making a specific figure?"
I'm planning on usng one of the sword wielding figures from the Warlord Celtic Female Warriors set. I'll have to get out the green stuff and Vikingize her clothing anyway. Should I make her pregnant? Bare breasted, which involves not just adding a couple little lumps, but trying to figure out how the clothing would hang, and attempting to sculpt that (which would be very much pushing my skills to the limit)?
