I've been working on some 3D printed Crusaders from Anachron Games/Shapeways.

Trying to make them look like Ultramarines (from the 3rd edition books).

Detailing is a bit fiddly, drybrushing didn't seem to make them pop, so had to paint on where I wanted things to show up.

This is the first one that's completed (for testing purposes), so will work through the rest of them when I can

drybrushing does not seem to work on the shapeways stuff (I have some 15mm'ish ones from admiral ducksauce (which I like)). It seems like the material will soak in the paint a bit too. The frosted ultra detail(?), does not have this effect as much as the one the step below it though imo.

That being said, the poses look great and you put some nice details on yours, nice work.

i want to buy these in the worst way. but they look, i don't know, fuzzy…sell me on them, please!
again, why is'nt some guy in poland making gw style sci fi in 15mm?

Wolfprophet14 Oct 2012 3:45 p.m. PST

Someone would need to move to China to do that. Then no number of lawyers could reach him there.

how "in" would you be for some nice 15mm gw scifi, wolf? i wonder if any of the people at gw think they should have done 40k in 15mm?

Wolfprophet15 Oct 2012 2:36 a.m. PST

Mmm. 15mm is best done in metal. They would never turn back now. The best we could hope for "officially" is them sub-licensing to another company to produce….but that would probably never happen. These are the best we'd get now, but as you point out, they are very fuzzy…. That wasn't so much a problem for ACP though…. Maybe it's possible to give them a nice clean up and cast them in metal?

Not to bad, I could use some as dollies for my 15mm SM sculpts, the weapon would help no end, heres some of my stuff if you haven't seen it, the projects stalled at the moment because I ran out of GS and started on other things while waiting for it, will return to this in the next couple of months hopefully.

Are you suggesting buying someones figures and 're-casting' them?

Wolfprophet15 Oct 2012 7:16 a.m. PST

Nope. Suggesting contacting the creator and asking if we can get them in a material that doesn't look like crap.

Although, he's already guilty of gratuitous IP theft. So, either way….. I don't think it really matters much at this stage what I'm suggesting or what someone thinks I'm suggesting.

Howdy, just saw this topic! Thanks for the kind words on the poses and all, but yes I do agree the material is less than ideal. I have no plans to switch to a more traditional manufacturing method at this point, mostly because it would require re-sculpting almost every model. They've been designed with 3D printing in mind and the majority of them have too many undercuts or impossible geometries to move straight to casting.

Also, with regards to IP theft. There's a lot of confusion on this subject, but I've been fairly careful about it. Companies own their trademarks and own the physical expressions of their products. I haven't stepped on any trademarks and I'm careful to point out that my models are not affiliated with certain major companies in any way.

Further, while my models do have an identifiable style, you cannot copyright a style or an idea. Your intellectual property extends only the physical expression of the idea. So you can't recast and sell someone else's models, or sell virtually identical copies, but you can certainly make your own future knights with guns and sell them to your heart's content. Intellectual property does not cover broad or obvious ideas, and frankly that's a good thing for the entire hobby.

Yah I'm not sure big shoulder pads counts as gratuitous ip theft.

I totally agree with Anachron. Not-anything is a basic pillar of this hobby. People create worlds we enjoy through movies, books, and games. Design inspired by someone else's work isn't theft. It does however allow us to revisit worlds through our imaginations and clever painting skills :)

While it's not my favourite material, and have had to abandon my usual painting style of paint/wash/drybrush to paint/wash/extreme highlight, in a group (and at tabletop distance) they look quite good.
