I was looking at some pictures of 3D asteroids used by some X-Wing players and it got me thinking that if the model of the asteroid is mounted on a pole on a hex base, it sort of doesn't work right for game purposes.
What I thought was need was a slightly better than a picture model that miniatures bases can overlap or sit on. So I came up with this.
I had some 6mm thick cork sheeting left from another project already cut up into rectangles and squares
Break the regular pieces into various sizes
Next tear off regular straight edges with a pair of pliers to create ragged edges, you can use your fingers if you want but I found more control with the pliers.
For the next step I used my finger nail or some pointy nosed pliers and I started tearing the flat surface out of the top face of the cork. This gives a craggy rocky surface to the asteroid.
Next I painted the top of the cork with matt black spay
Once the black has dried I dry brushed a mix of dark brown, tin bits (for an iron effect)and finally light grey on some edges all over the model.
viola quick, cheap and easy asteroids
