I bet you're also the kind of chap that, having seen a police notice that states "did you witness this incident?", you ring the number from the notice to say "no, I didn't".

The man asked a question. I answered it. He also said "If the answer is yes" implying that a valid answer would be "no".

Perhaps I should have said, "No, I have never heard of it before, but if I see it I might buy it."

I read it years ago as part of an anthology. It was an interesting alternative take on things. Best described as Victorian Science Fiction or – gawd forbid – steampunk – before those genre really existed.
