I recently watched a rather good doco on Warrior, General Jack Seely's mount, that charged with his Canadian command in one of the last cavalry charges of The Great War. There are no shortages of famous military horse: how about Butcher? Charged with the 13th LD at Balaclava & returned, with his rider, inspite of a severe wound. Returned to England at war's end, served in Ireland & Canada & retired at age 25. Nominations? |

I didn't know there was a documentary about Warrior. I've read the book which was particularly interesting for me because I grew up on the Isle Of Wight and know the places mentioned. The field the horse lived in is a VERY steep hill! |

Comanche was Custer's horse. He survived The Little Big Horn battle and has been the subject of a movie and a Johnny Horton song. I think he ended up being owned by Souix Indians. Marengo was Napoleon's horse. At least for a little while. I don't know what ever happened to him. He's probably dead by now. |

George Gordon Meade's horse Old Baldy. Wounded four times during the War, he survived and was retired after the fourth wound. He lived 30 years. link |

Babieca, El Cid's horse. Babieca actually means 'stupid' in old Spanish, so it may have been more of an epithet than a name. |
