Old school – one of the "alien" fleet in the original "Blake's 7" TV show was made from two hairdryers.

If hairdryers aren't your thing, try using a variety of plastic water guns. They're widely available everywhere and cheap. Add a few plastic bits and such, paint, and you're done.
