North Sea Boats launched the first of four advanced, stealthy, 63 meter trimaran patrol boats for the Indonesian Navy on August 31, 2012. link The Klewang is armed with concealed gun turret, missile launchers and small arms posts. Trimarans offer very stable weapons platforms, and can carry various Missile systems; including Type 705 (up to 8), RBS15, Penguin or Exocet, and 40-57mm Naval Guns, or a CIWC (Close In Weapon System). These can be mounted high on the superstructure, giving better range and firing arc. Sensors can also be installed high up without concerns for stability. Now, all we need are models, stats, and a scenario! |

That's an interesting looking vessel. "Sensors can also be installed high up without concerns for stability". I'm not so sure. Seems to be quite a bit narrower than the one my dad built for sailing. |

It's a heck of a lot wider than most 63 meter patrol boats. I suspect that the ballasting effects of engines, props, fuel, and so forth all change the center of gravity quite a bit compared to a sailboat. |

By "Type 705" do they mean Chinese C705 ASCM? |

Why bother with a "concealed" turret, I wonder? |

Maybe so you can't see precisely what weapon a given ship has? For a terrorist/pirate, that might influence your tactics. Alternatively, so you can't see what it's aiming at? |

"Why bother with a "concealed" turret, I wonder?" Perhaps they mean a retractable, or partially retractable turret that fairs into the superstructure to reduce the radar profile. The Brits went to a lot of effort refitting "stealth" turrets to their Type 23 Frigates, and, I may be wrong, to some Type 42 destroyers too, so presumably a turret sticking out does have a significant effect on radar signature. Cheers, Bertie |

"presumably a turret sticking out does have a significant effect on radar signature" Absolutely it does. In fact just about any piece of badly designed (from an RCS point of view)kit on the upper deck can render any other "stealth" features null and void. The Swedish "Visby" class corvettes feature a concealed 57mm gun. The T23 went to the 4.5" Mk8 gun with the "Kryten's Head" turret because of this too. T42 got the low RCS turret only because the RN upgraded all its 4.5" mounts to the same standard. |

Yea, I imagine it is to reduce the radar profile. Of course, those Visby-style turrets, with the folding doors for the guns to retract into are rather neat too. Only downside I can see with those is when they fail to work as advertised, due to a mechanical breakdown, saltwater corrosion, ice, etc. |

Wonder how it will fare when it passes close in front of one of the huge merchant vessels that cross Indonesian waters, when they can't see it on radar. There are regular losses of yachts and small vessels which are run down at night or in bad weather, and many of those carry 'radar beacons' – large radar relectors to make them visible to just such vessels. |

Or, not: link Too bad, it would have given the RAN Collins boats something to do. |

Yeah, I wonder – are the new stealth materials fire-retardant? |

I thougbt it was making a smokescreen |

Well, the one on fire is not the Klewang, but the Sulieman (or something like that). Same class or a different class? Rob |

That is a very impressive smoke-generation system. ;-) Almost makes it look as if it is on fire, which will certainly help to confuse opponents, who may then be less inclined to waste missiles on it, should hostilities commence. |

Yeah, I wonder – are the new stealth materials fire-retardant? Depends on what materials they're using. Angled steel with ferrite-ball paint? It's a steel hull! composites, depends on what resin you're using. |
