Mike or Rebel Minis has been trying to convince me to get back to doing some painting and he found a great way to do it. I got a nice little envelope in the mail with an assortment of alien rifle troopers and a command group. Now what was special about these is that I asked Mike a few years ago about some alien forces where the units were made up of numerous different types of aliens, but where they all fought together and used similar armor and equipment. I wanted these troops to use for forces similar to the old Alien Legion comics or the Confederation novels by Tanya Huff. Well, I got exactly what I wanted. Each trooper is a little different with slightly modified armor (large/small legs, two toes, bird feet, backwards knee etc), different body size and each a unique alien face. Everyone is armed with the same rifles and the armor is the same, even with some minor differences. These were a lot of fun to paint and all the details on the armor really make it stand out. I know my colors were rather simple, but I was looking back at the old Alien Legion and drawing my style from that, while not trying to copy it. As a note, these guys are all roughly the same size as all of Rebels other lines, so they are not part of the trend for 15mm to edge up into the 18 and 20mm range. If you have EF Marines, Titan Marines or just about any of Rebel's other minis, you have a good indicator of their size. Hope you like the pictures. I expect Mike will have these out fairly soon, but not sure what he will call them (likely my taking forever to find time to paint them kept you from having these by now!) Main Pictures Link: link

The actual body armour on these Alien Legion miniatures looks fantastic, extremely well detailed, the leader with the monocular and slung assault blaster looks great as does the blue sub officer pointing. Now if it was at all possible to get the same miniatures equipped with all the same styled helmets and then painted black they could be used as not 'Space above and beyond' Chigs. |

AVAMANGO, The Chigs were taller than humans, so these guys would likely be too short. While some of them are taller than others, they all roughly fit in with all the rest of the Rebel Minis line in size. Even with the same heads, you also have the different alien aspects of the armor and body shapes (longer legs/arms on some) that make all of these unique. Good idea, but not sure these are a perfect fit for it. Jeff |

You could always add the miniatures to a slightly thicker base to give them a bit more height, but the Chig idea was just one of those passing thoughts as i was so taken by the look of the body armour. |

AVAMANGO, I think the Retained Knights from 15mm.co.uk might be better from the stand point they are already taller than a human and look a little like the Chigs. Might need to update or convert the weapons. The sculpts are a little dated now, but still fairly nice. Link: link Scale picture of a Retained Knight and a few Rebel minis:

Superb! I'll be in for those and seem to fit in well with GZG NI's for scale. Excellent. |

Very nice work, love the paint schemes. Mike needs to get his sculptor to do a second group of non-humanoid types with similar kit, though. We need some tripeds and scuttlers and centauroids and other weirdies for a real Legion. Be nice to get some radically different sizes too – not all intelligent life should be human scale. |

The more I look at these guys the more I really dig them. I like that sculpts don't take themselves too seriously. While we've had a lot of "gritty" types coming out over the last year it's nice to see some minis that are a bit more "comic book". The short sleeves, one-handed gun grips, the larger than life muscles, all a good combination for a fun and different alien force. I'll be picking some up for a multi-species military for my games. Are there any duplicates in the species portrayed in the figures? It's not entirely clear from the pics. -Eli |

@MrHarold Well, well, well. That armor is very close, isn't it? With a little greenstuff work on the head of the fig painted with the blue skin tone above, you'd have a very nice Turian. They're a little too muscular, but maybe I could do something about that. it looks like there might be a couple in that set that could be tweeked into Protheans, as well. |
JRacel | 26 Sep 2012 8:29 a.m. PST |
Eli, There are no duplicates in the figures. Each is different. Glad you guys like these. Hopefully good sales will encourage Mike to do some more, PF willing. Jeff |
Eli Arndt | 26 Sep 2012 8:32 a.m. PST |
I know that PF developed a set of separate heads for this project. Maybe we could get those made available for some mix and match or something. -Eli |

They are up on the site :) Rebelminis.com @Eli- If we get enought interest, we will offer head sprues :) |
JRacel | 26 Sep 2012 8:59 a.m. PST |
Best of luck on sales Mike. I think these will do very well for you. I also think the separate heads are a great idea. Jeff |
Eli Arndt | 26 Sep 2012 9:24 a.m. PST |
Thanks for the consideration Mike. While I think separate head sprues are cool, I know they are not the most popular thing in 15mm. Generally you either do them because you want to or not -Eli |

The first thing I thought when seeing the sculpts: Reinforcements for Khurasan's Jasmine Throne Foreign Battalion! Or vice versa. Wonderful looking minis! |
JRacel | 26 Sep 2012 12:31 p.m. PST |
Richard, These are smaller than the Jasmin Throne troopers from Khurasan. You may be able to do some mixing and matching since they are Aliens, but not sure they will blend well. The JT figures are larger in general, with fairly clean lines and less overall details. The Rebel figures are wearing much more detailed armor and clearly slug thrower type rifles versus energy weapons for JT. I personally see the JT figures as a more "friendly" Alien force and the Rebel Legion as being grittier individuals. I think the Rebel have a little more of the hard edge feel I like for Alien Legion and believe they would make outstanding Mercs or pirates. The Khurasan JT figures make a nice Alien force with lots of diversity, but in many cases they are a little cartoony and lack the tougher edge I think the Rebel minis have. I have both and like them for very different reasons. Now if Rebel could add a few really diverse critters into these forces, like the JT have, but with the hard gritty edge, then they would be really cool. Jeff |
