I considered using sheet metal and magnetic basing to prevent shifting of the troops in my Really Useful boxes during transport to conventions, etc, but when I considered the literally thousands of troops I would have to do this for, the time and monetary costs seemed prohibitive. So not a new idea (indeed, I was reminded of it by a comment on my earlier blog post on Really Useful Boxes), but a brief post about using inexpensive shelf liner to greatly reduce shifting:

Hope some of you find it of use!

I use magnetic sheet and washers or metal bases for my figures. I do use the rubber shelf liner for terrain in boxs. Works really well ! thumbs up

Nice idea Peter. I have been using 1/4" foam. I think this is a better choice when only using a bottom piece.

Thanks,

John

Beware that the resins in the rubber will etch your plastic storage box, and when exposed to any kind of heat and/or sunlight (especially when transported in your vehicle) will stick to your bases. Also if you lay any figures down so as to make contact with the rubber material it WILL etch the rubber matt pattern into the paint job. Already have suffered the experience of this material, so I do not recommend it for use.

The shelf liner does slide on that plastic a little. I spray lightly with spray rubber adhesive, and that anchors it nicely.

Good point to avoid contact with the figures themselves. I can see where heat might cause some sticking to the bases, especially for Historicon in July, so something to watch out for. I don't see where that would be likely to be a big issue, but it is worth being aware of the potential!

Ditto on the problems of this material sticking to figures. I have stored a large number of vintage Britain's lead figures on their sides in this type of material and many of them stuck. It took quite a bit of effort to clean them up without damaging the figures. Maybe if they're all standing up on the bases This material might not be such a bad idea.
