I got the chance to grab Fantasy Flight's X-Wing miniatures game and did an unboxing on my blog: link Enjoy! |

Wow! I think I see picking that up in my future. Plus I'm a total for Y-Wings. Thanks for posting that! Well done. Yes, I admit it. It was the McQuarrie Y-wing that got me as a kid.
X-Wings are for chumps! Y-Wings do all the heavy lifting! |

And if anybody else has a copy of the game and the old micro machines I would like to see a size comparison with those. |
thosmoss | 13 Sep 2012 9:01 a.m. PST |
Hard to guess, but are the ships roughly 40mm long? |
Only Warlock | 13 Sep 2012 9:06 a.m. PST |
Not sure. I'm going over to a hobby store this afternoon. If they have a copy I'll pick it up and make a measurement. |
ming31 | 13 Sep 2012 9:26 a.m. PST |
I played couple Demos at the store . If you like blue max You should like this game . BEWARE of the y fighter turret . I am picking up my copy after work today |

And if anybody else has a copy of the game and the old micro machines I would like to see a size comparison with those. The new ones are quite a bit larger. Very, very nice, but not really compatible. |

Great! Now I need to go pick this up after work tonight!!! |

Warlock, you are a man after my own heart- I was always a big Y-Wing buff, too. I just placed my order with the Warstore, and am anxiously awaiting delivery

The best fighter pilot in the galaxy was that lone Y-wing pilot that survived the first Death Star attack. We shall never know his name..;( |

Disappointed at the number of ships you get
Not to mention my vow that Lucas gets no more money from me
But despite all that it looks like a solid product |
ImhotepMagi | 13 Sep 2012 4:59 p.m. PST |
Thanks for the comments guys. @BigNickR: Three ships is plenty for learning the game. A core set is roughly a 3rd of a constructed force for each faction. It's not a bad deal. @thosmoss: An X-Wing is roughly 45mm long and 35mm wide. TIEs are roughly 35mm long and 30mm wide. |

Te Y wing is pretty damn cool. If suited out right with an xwing for cover it will do some damage. Now they are available at target here. I do have to say Im really looking forward to the A wing and TIE interceptor kits. |
BlackWidowPilot | 13 Sep 2012 6:28 p.m. PST |
Always did like the Y-wing and could never figure out why if they had a 360 gun turret they flew without a damn gunner on board to take care of those pesky TIE fighters
give me a two-seater with a 360 gun mount and I'll OWN YOU. Leland R. Erickson Metal Express metal-express.net

I pre-ordered from CoolStuff months ago and there had better be a 'we've shipped' notice in my email tomorrow or I will fly there to smack someone. |

Upon further reflection, I feel that I should point out that I was jesting in my previous post. I don't want anyone to think I was serious (though I do hope to see the 'it has shipped' confirmation soon). |

Always did like the Y-wing and could never figure out why if they had a 360 gun turret they flew without a damn gunner on board Lack of personnel, probably. |
DS6151 | 14 Sep 2012 9:07 a.m. PST |
They have droids to do that. |
Spudeus | 14 Sep 2012 11:30 a.m. PST |
If I remember correctly, the EU stuff explained that there were actually 2 Y-wing variants: one-man with guns fixed ahead and two-man with a rotating turret. Still somewhat lame, I know. I mean, if I knew in advance that I would be flying down a trench with no room for evasive maneuver, I would sure as snot bring a rear gunner! |
Only Warlock | 14 Sep 2012 5:29 p.m. PST |
Yeah I can imagine those poor bastards in the TIE fighters whose sole hope is Maneuverability as the Y-Wing Gunners pot 'em like clay pigeons while the Pilots come in low and slow and drop one right down the 'Ol thermal exhaust Port. |
wargame insomniac | 15 Sep 2012 2:49 p.m. PST |
Thanks- look much better than WoTC fighters. Would like to see them in comparison to Micro Machines, as I have quite a few Micromachine SW fighters. Cheers James |

There is a reason it is called X-wing. They rock! I hope to build a fleet of them around 30 if I can get a good deal. VR James Mattes

Considering the individual mini's are selleing for about $15 USD a pop in the store (they come with cards and other stuff), that's gonna cost ya. |
Chef Lackey Rich | 16 Sep 2012 5:24 a.m. PST |
The Y-wings have a turret upgrade option – quite expensive at 5 points IIRC, but it does wonders for their shooting. However, before TIE pilots despair too much, remember that it's an ion cannon, so fairly short ranged, not especially good at hitting dodgy targets, and it will never do more than one damage. It's the ionization effect that will kill you the next turn if it does connect – you're pretty much a sitting duck for a round. |
Parzival | 16 Sep 2012 8:37 p.m. PST |
Keep in mind that in "reality" the Y-Wing turret is limited to a hemispherical firing arc; it can only shoot at targets "above" the fighter; enemies approaching from below are shielded by the structure of the Y-Wing itself. (Similar to the ball turret in the belly of a B-17, only with the firing sphere reversed.) I doubt this limitation has been included in the game itself, though I suppose if it has simple altitude rules, the limit easily could be there. |
Chef Lackey Rich | 16 Sep 2012 8:59 p.m. PST |
There are no altitude rules, and it's irrelevant anyway since the turret could be brought to bear on any target with a simple roll. Unlike a B-17, the fighter isn't going to fall out of the sky if it flies "upside down" or at a 90 degree angle to the plane of the playing surface. Besides, realism and Star Wars do not mix. Don't start in on vector movement either – save that for the Babylon 5 fan mods. :) |
Parzival | 17 Sep 2012 5:24 a.m. PST |
Good point about the roll. (Of course, the pilot would still have to *do* the roll— which also means he has to be aware of an attacker approaching from both his most vulnerable spot and his most significant blind spot. And if there's more than one attacker approaching at diverse angles
) Besides, realism and Star Wars do not mix. So true. Whatever was I thinking? |

(Similar to the ball turret in the belly of a B-17, only with the firing sphere reversed.) For every problem, there's a solution:
Roll your ship, get above the Imperial stooge flying the TIE fighter, and give 'em both barrels up close and personal I say!

Hey, when your targeting computer can't hit an exhaust port TWO METERS wide, you take what you can get
I wonder how many parsecs it takes to recharge an ion-cannon? |

Just ordered my copy today from Barnes & Noble (got a 20% off coupon and redeemed Discover rewards for a gift certificate
so basically, I got it for free). Alas, I shall not be able to unbox it till after Christmas, as it's my wife's present to me. But I don't mind the wait
especially as I tacked on two more books from the Destroyermen series onto the order. |
