My understanding is that the Scot's artillery was not painted, but tarred, though I can't remember where I read it. True, or is that from an earlier time period? |

Thanks, it was probably the Osprey. I did a quick look in it last night, and didn't find it. I guess the best way to paint it would be semi-gloss black, with perhaps (somehow) a suggestion of brown. |

Pine tar on wood is defiantly a brown, very dark but not black. Coal tar varies by both extraction process and the coal used dark browns to black some with a greenish tinge.

I was using this image of coal tar a a guide. Your example makes more sense. |
