Airforce brat here through the 60s and 70s, I grew up with those babies screaming over head. Great pictures. |

Grew up just north of the Twin Cities. SAC used them as practice for bombing runs (probably out of North Dakota), remember many times B-36s and B-47s (fell absolutely in love with them, gorgeous!) coming over the house at mid-levels. In my mind now, it seems that they were low, but probably just a little kid's impression, and it was probably only a couple times, I was only 5 or 6, and memories do "improve" with age. I know I was excited! They did make a sight! We also "frequently" had Navy Blimps (that tells you how long ago this was) overhead also (they were stationed in Minneapolis' Wold Chamberlain Airport, or perhaps St. Paul's Holman Field,guess they were flying to the Lake to look for Russian subs. The lake also played host once to Martin Mariner that had engine trouble. Took a couple days to get that baby up and out. I clearly DO remember the squadron of F-89s stationed at Wold, I even got to sit in one – at least the radar operator's seat, and also the many B-52s dispersed there during the Cuban Missile crisis in 1962, was much older then, and was scared to death! |
