A few months ago, I was designing some paper miniatures for the WSS (Junior General style). I had my CS Grant Armies and Uniforms of Marlborough's Wars out for reference. I had some time and drive recently and wanted to get back to the project. When I looked for the book, it was no where to be found. I would have figured that it was on my computer desk or somewhere on the main level. Nope! Looked on my game shelf in my bedroom. Not there. Down stairs where I keep my miniatures and books/games I seldom look at. Not there either. I suspect it was thrown out with the news papers. The horror.

Had a similar experience with my copy of On to Richmond. Ed Mohrmann hooked me up with a printed copy and later I was fortunate enough to find an original hard copy on e-bay.

Has this sort of thing ever happened to you? What do you do to combat it?

Always.

I am hoping for reasonably priced RFID tags with a locator app for my smartphone.

Yep, have the same problem and for miniatures as well! I'm still looking for a unit of Chasseurs d'Alpin that I bought some years ago.

Yes.
The answer is to never take books off shelves – just sit by them and absorb the information waves they give off.

I recently had a house swallow my library book about the hurricane of 1938. Most displeased.

And here I was blaming my kids…

Evidently black holes exist everywhere. I have lost several books and small pieces that I dropped from my work table and just disappeared into the black hole under my table.

The other side of the coin is when books appear. You see a book in a used book store and buy it only to find that there is already a copy in place on the shelf.

Indeed! Though in this case, I am about to shell out $30 USD plus shipping to get another copy of the book and THEN my old copy will reappear!

Hey once I separated my books into a box to keep and a box of books to dump at the library thrift sale. Guess which box of books I dropped off to the library thrift sale. I'm sure I made someone's day.

Books, scenarios, sections of rules from boardgames, units, whole armies- both sides (1/300 scale), eventually found them in a box marked 1/72.
