Quick question: just finished painting the first six Pz38(t)'s for my Barbarossa German force and reaching for the decals, realize that they served in mixed companies with Panzer II's and a Panzer I……

So my question is, would the turret numbers (running low to high) start with the Pz I, Pz II or the 38's?

I'm using the orbat information given here PDF link

According to what I gleaned Panzertruppe vol1 as well as other sources, it would seem the light panzer platoon would be the first in the numbering order (thus 11x for 1st co 1st plt) while the 38(t)s or other tanks would be 2nd through 4th plts.

Edit: but keen in mind sometimes these numbers would change for counterintelligence purposes…

Damon.

I've seen numbers both ways in photos from the operations in Poland – some 38(t) had low numbers (one had 113 on it), in another I saw one with 432. It also depended on the Panzerdivision – if it was primarily equipped with the 35(t) and 38(t) tanks, they were numbered in every approved method depending on the company.

Thanks – I'm going to start with 5th Company, so I've gone with "501" for the commander (tempted to paint "Levi" on it somewhere just for fun) and 521 thru 525 for the rest. When my Pz II's finally get here, I'll put the 51- series turret number on them. Close enough for government work!

That last photo is amazing BTW, you would have thought the photos of Lenin and Uncle Joe would be the first things torn down!
