Is there one country (aside from the one you reside in!) whose entire military history fascinates you more than any other?

For me, its a dead tie between Japan and Britain (including Scotland and Wales). I could spend the rest of my life just wargaming conflicts from those two countries and be happy.

A close third would be Poland.

Thanks for input.

Apart from this scepter'd isle, it would have to be France.

Don't tell the French that, though. If France asks, tell 'em I said 'Germany'.

Gauls, Charlemagne, Joan, assorted Louies, Napoleon, la legion, trying to win saddled with idiot rules, etc. All light my panel.

As the wife is French (well, Breton to be precise)…I'd have to go for Brittany.

…which is, as I'm sure you will agree, an entirely seperate entity from La Belle France.

If you don't agree, I'll send the Mrs round.

…otherwise, I think Spain would be a front runner.

I know what you mean Rrobby. I often get side tracked for long periods of time but I always end coming back to Japan or the UK.

The entire military history of no country fascinates me. Other than the US, England comes closest.

Two that I have a keen period interest in would be Macedonian military history or Frankish military history. Greek, Roman, Comanche and Persian history are deep interests, but with more interest in cultural history than military and political history.

This country. I've made 3 cross country trips with my ex since we retired. 98% of the people we met were friendly and had amazing stories to tell. Regional food, Roadside Americana (which you can't experience via cell phone) etc

It kind of varies by decade. Excluding things like Ancients and Vikings, it has been Britain (including the Celtic fringe), France (colonial era and I think about WWII), and Greece.

Agesilaus05 Sep 2012 6:29 p.m. PST

Purely biased, but true, answer – Greece.
And all the other warrior cultures.
Nepal – Gurhkhas
Punjab – Sikhs
Scandinavia – Vikings, Varangians
Japan – Samurai
Scotland – Highlanders
I especially like scenarios where the warrior people are sort of minding their own business and someone tries to attack them.
"Let's make an example of the these Spartans" for instance.

Tommy2005 Sep 2012 6:40 p.m. PST

Ever since the original Space: 1889 came out, I've been a confirmed Anglophile. England and the rest of the UK have been at the centre of my wargaming world for the better part of 23 years.

Rottcodd05 Sep 2012 6:46 p.m. PST

Italy by far. Ancient Rome, the Norman invasions of Naples during the Middle Ages, the Italian Wars of the Renaissance, Venice and her influence in the eastern Mediterranean. After that, history ceases to interest me.

But I realize that much of the interest is because plenty of other powers were fighting in and around Italy. It is a crossroads of the Mediterranean world.

Also, my wife is Italian…

Personal logo Inari7 Supporting Member of TMP05 Sep 2012 8:25 p.m. PST

I agree, Italy/Rome
So much happened in that country….

Martin Rapier06 Sep 2012 3:31 a.m. PST

As we aren't allowed to nominate our own country then it is probably a tie between France and Germany. 'Germany' in the geographical sense rather than the political one (as a unified Germany has only existed for a century or so).

I probably have greater breadth of knowledge about France but greater depth for very specific periods for Germany.
