Looking to get into ancient naval gaming. Want to play quick game of 2hrs or less, maybe 12 to a max of 20 ships per side on a 6 by 4 table.

Quality is more important than cost.

So far I have looked at 1/1200 and 1/600 but can't make up my mind. Based on what I stated earlier any recommendations on scale and vendor?

Xyston 1:600

They are nice and chunky with extra crew, towers and engines available seperately. Smallest ship is bireme, largest is a seven – but conversions are not too difficult.

Langton in 1/1200 or Xyston in 1/600. Depends on the rules and available space. Games in 1/1200 tend to abstract boarding actions and run quicker than those which take a more detailed approach to boarding. If you are interested an the more detailed approach I would go with smaller battles and Xyston.

Madmike as a low cost alternative to the ones mention above you might want to look at Roman Seas paper ships. romanseas.com They are 1/300 scale They will work with 6mm figures and there are plenty of those out there. They assemble quickly and if one gets broken you simply make another one. I have them and like them a lot.

Thanks for all your suggestion.

Start with Roman Seas..

If you really love it but the stunning (and exorbitant) Langton models.

Agree with olicana. Xyston is also my choice: easy to paint and convert.
