Wally Simon's Secrets of Wargame Design: A Tabletop Toolkit of Ideas, Analysis, and Rule Mechnics is starting to generate some feedback and reviews, so I thought it a good idea to offer up a free sample article or two for all us gamers thinking about designing a set or rules or just tweaking the ones we already have. On Military Matters allowed me to post the articles (in PDF format) on their website as well as snippets of reviews and links back to the original reviews, table of contents, and other info. (Disclosure: OMM here in the US sells the booklet, as does Caliver Books in the UK). The article is called: "Ancient City Fight: Gridded Play, Reinforcements, and a Melee Template." The other article, which is the introduction to the booklet is called: "Wally Rules: The Search for Tabletop Perfection." The PDF files will load into your browser. You'll find them here: link Questions, comments, and other feedback welcomed here at TMP, through OMM, or direct to my e-mail. Russ (the editor of the project) |

This sort of thing has been discussed and developed over many years in the pages of "The Nugget", the journal of Wargame Developments. link I have a feeling that Wally may have been a member of WD for a while? |

I don't know if he was, but he probably saw issues from time to time. As I read through his PW Review newsletter, he would recount trips to the UK to visit friends, so I guess that at some point in time he was likely to run across an issue. I used to read both PWR and Nugget when I was writing the magazine review column for MWAN magazine. Russ |

Thanks for putting this up. The book was on my radar as a possible purchase, and this may be the incentive to make the purchase. |

Not as far as I know. I just checked the link above and it works. Try it again. You can always go to onmilitarymatters.com and click on the "On Military Matters Rules-Reviews, Notes and Feedback" button on the left (yellow) side of the screen. That will lead you to the top item (Secrets) and a link "for Reviews, Table of Contents and Feedback" which will bring you to the chapters. A little round about, but I just checked that and it works, too. Russ |
