Ok went to GENCON and had a blast this year. So last year I tried out the playtest version of this and was not impressed at the least. So I was not inclined to try it this year figuring that FF didnt listen to the suggestions. We ll went by and my buddy decided to get a box set and a few blisters. I decided to give it a second chance and I have to say that they have a winner in this game. The pieces are slick and well made. The ships are sweet and the rules are very well put together. We played a couple more demos and by the end of the day the two of us were in for 6 box sets and about a dozen blisters of the X-wing, TIE fighter, TIE advanced and Y wing. We went back to the hotel and popped open the game with a couple of other gamers we met and went about doing a 150 pt game with each getting 75 pts. we were quickly in to a good fight and the dice gods were on my side by the end of it. I decided to go with 2 xwings and lots of add ons and the rest went with a couple of big guys and a lot of little guys. it plays smooth, has enough diversity between the two factions and the sides balance well. I recommend this game very highly and you should give it a shot. BTW on Saturday after 3pm they slipped models of the Millennium Falcon, Slave 1, A Wing and the TIE interceptor into the display case with a release date of winter 2012. The blisters come with extra counters and more pilot and upgrade cards so you should get them as well.
Later and hope this helps,
CW

Thanks for the report Combat. I recall reading the early reviews on Boardgame Geek and they were luke warm. So I'm pleased to hear that the final version came out well.

Hmmm, looks like they took the Wings of War planning mechanic and reduced it to one maneuver instead of 2 (WWII) or 3 (WWI). I like the WWII version. I wonder how this change affects the SW game?

combat wombat19 Aug 2012 8:04 p.m. PST

the maneuver wheel is actually nicer than the cards. quick spin and lock it down. I like it better than WW2 but on par with WW1.

Mako1119 Aug 2012 10:37 p.m. PST

Sounds good.

How large are the minis (say in comparison to the plastic Micromachines ones, if you have seen those), and do they appear durable enough to withstand play?

I recall last year of at least one X-Wing getting battle damaged fairly quickly.

Wombat,
thanks for the info!

Unfortunately we had to place pre-orders for the product already some months ago…

combat wombat20 Aug 2012 6:02 a.m. PST

a little smaller i think they are 1/270 scale. they are very nice and durable. The same issue I had last year but they fixed the game balance and the xwing handles well.

On my wish list.
Unfortunately, that Falcon looks to be out of scale, especially compared to Slave 1. Shouldn't it be at least twice as big as it is? (Maybe even three times as big?) I realize some fudging will happen, but I think they should have kept it a bit larger.

Mako1120 Aug 2012 8:45 a.m. PST

I agree that the Falcon should probably be about double that size. Just chalk up the difference to distance, or seek out the old, larger, plastic toy one.

Check out the Action Fleet model. I think it's about 6" – 8" x 8" – 10" in size, so should be just about perfect.

Those standard Tie Fighters look really large to me as well, compared to everything else, including the Advanced Tie Fighters.

I know they said they were making all the minis to scale, based upon the original models, and blueprints, but I guess I'm just used to all of the old, out of scale minis.

combat wombat20 Aug 2012 9:58 a.m. PST

According to wookiepedia
Slave 1 is 21 m by 21m.
And the mf is 34m by 25m.
So these models scale right from what I can tell.

Thanks for the review. I can see myself dropping a bunch of cash on this game. More money in Lucas pocket from me.

Sergeant Crunch20 Aug 2012 7:37 p.m. PST

Thanks for the review. Been waiting for the game to come out and was hoping somebody would post their thoughts on gameplay independent of FFG. Pretty much cemented my decision to buy.

Sergeant Crunch20 Aug 2012 7:38 p.m. PST

Oooh, interesting thought…

Modifying the rules to play Macross fighter battles…

Or for the fighter dogfights from the Space Battleship Yamato universe… a man can dream, anyway…evil grin

I think galactica both old and new would work great.

Anyone know who makes that tile layout in Combat wombats photo above?

Ajt. It's a one off they made for the show. I'm remedying that situation right now. Finishing up the turret tonight.

I don't know, still looks the Slave One is too big to my eyes. But I was conditioned by the Kenner toys as a kid.

Mako1122 Aug 2012 8:13 p.m. PST

I have the same issue in terms of the vehicle proportions, due to how they appeared in the movies, and from the earlier toys as well.

Personal logo Parzival Supporting Member of TMP23 Aug 2012 6:17 a.m. PST

It's the cockpits.

The Falcon has a four man cockpit (two wide).
Slave 1 is one man, IIRC.
The TIEs are one man.

Yet the TIE cockpits look larger than the MF's, and Slave 1's looks larger still.

Maybe they were that way in the films, but they didn't come across that way.

(In contrast, the A-wing looks spot on perfect.)

Spudeus25 Aug 2012 10:10 a.m. PST

Re: TIE advanced. It is quite a bit smaller than the standard TIEs in episode IV! The Y-Wing/X-Wing sizes look about right as well.

This is one game I'm going to try not to get obsessed over scale with. I mean, if they ever introduce capital ships, it'll really get wonky!

ThorLongus30 Aug 2012 6:50 a.m. PST

got my stuff from a flgs 3 days ago.
basic game and 4 supplements = roughly a little under 100$ us. I think it is a good price ,relatively..2 x wings 1 y wing 3 tie, and 1 tie advanced. rules seem simple yet fun
overall satisfied with purchase

Seems pretty cool. So many games, so little time…

I can't wait to get my hands on the game. I have downloaded the rules already and looking incorporating some of the ideas into my rules which are more 3D.

Watched part of Episode IV again the other night – the trench raid, and in it, the standard Ties do appear to be about twice as tall as the Advanced Tie, and about the same length, so looks like the X-Wing minis are about right in size.

A bit surprised by that.

Apparently, all the other ones I've had in the past were out of scale.

Last Hussar03 Sep 2012 1:31 p.m. PST

How many Minis in the basic set?

CptKremmen04 Sep 2012 5:20 a.m. PST

I think the basic set has 1 X-wing and 2 tie fighters.

ThorLongus06 Sep 2012 6:54 a.m. PST

does any one know how the old WOTC collectible star wars prepaints fighters scale with these… may be a cool way to get cheap duplicates of ywings xwings ,ties?????

combat wombat06 Sep 2012 7:33 p.m. PST

i think they may be bigger.

Mako1107 Sep 2012 2:11 a.m. PST

You can see some pics on Google images, if you type in X-Wing and Gencon.

The SSB minis are a lot smaller, say on the order of about 75% of their size, roughly.

vojvoda09 Sep 2012 9:12 a.m. PST

I think if you compare the fighting from the movie along with the data on Wookiepedia, you will find ranges are about less than 20 or so ship's lenghts at most. Using the new (I am guessing here,) Titanium size ships that come in the game. One to one ship ranges are grossly distorted. SWMB ships and Micro Machines are what I am using. Ranges are round 12 inches for short range. Note that the combat is totally against all rules of space and normal air to air combat factors, but to have a game with the "feel" of the movie the Smaller scale ships work better. IMHO.
