I am looking for rules to game the more open warfare of 1914 using 6mm Irregular Miniatures bases,

I have Command Decision "Over the Top" in which each stand represents a platoon but am looking for rules to game larger actions.

I am aware of Great War Spearhead but the second version is not yet published and I was wondering if there are any other alternatives?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Alan

Peter Pig's "Square Bashing"?
Their site says they are being redone in Aug. 2012; rule set #16, heres a link:

Another vote for Square Bashing, does the job very nicely, and new version out in the month hopefully

Thank you for the faith. Yes, square bashing should work just fine. 3 x 4 foot table. Six inch squares. In 6mm I would suggest using the 15mm basing conventiosn with double the figs. Thuis a basic infnatry batallion woiuld be 4 bases (each 3x3cm). Each abse would mount about 10 figures. typical 1914 army woiuld be 11 battalions, 4 MGs, 4 field guns , 2 cavalry regiments??

Piquet's "Barrage" also works well for this.

Of the commercial sets, then another recomendation for Square Bashing or GWSH, both use 1 base = 1 company.

I've had reasonable success using the WW2 operational rules 'Megablitz' (1 base = 1 battalion) for both 1914 and 1918 games, and you might also wish to have a look at Phil Barkers 'Horse, Foot & Guns' which works at the same scale and covers 1914.

For 1914 games we mainly play Richard Brooks 'OP14' rules these days, multiple corps sized actions in an evening. Published in the Wargames Developments Journal but I can't recall which issue.

I have played Over the top and GWSH solo for years, still waiting for version 2, then try and find someone to play against in N.I

OP-14 is in issue #236. I recently printed off all the articles about it. Issue #238 has some battle reports and more discussion about the rules IIRC.

Thanks,

John

TFL's Through The Blood And Mud works all through the war, and is very affordable in 6mm.

They also do If the Lord Spares Us, for the middle east and bigger battles. Im sure theres a western front 1914 adaptation in one of their specials.

I can't believe I forgot that, owning both sets and all!

Bloody Picnic rules, Divisional Size battles works well in 6mm. They do a rather good supplement book with quite a few battles for 1914. Two Irregular bases for an infantry Company.
