I admit, there's a helluva lot of RP that goes on (and almost zero 'tactics and 'gaming'). BUT, we play it almost like any other RPG. The GM writes the scenario and the players are completely blind to the plot and have to figure out what's going on and face the challenges just like any other RPG. However, in most cases the game will play out more or less the way the GM expected it. BUT that's purely because our scenarios are tailored to the characters and the players rather than being an 'off the shelf' game. ie a scenario will be developed taking into account the characters background and motives and the way the players themselves tend to act. Having played all kinds of RPG's for more than 30 years I definitely find the 'narrative' type of RPG far more immersive than the 'tactical' type of RPG, especially in a campaign game. It's refreshing to play a character that you can develop game after game without having to worry whether that kobold with a spear will wipe you out in an embarassing way with a random lucky dice roll. |

Put me in the new style/narrative/story telling/indie camp. Sure, I still like the sci-fi tactical crunch (heh, I'm designing a grav tank war game in my spare time.) But, since the majority of my gaming is done over Skype these days, map heavy turn based games have to take a back seat to story games. -- TAZ |
