Those look cool, but more like a diorama than a medieval game.

I am building some of Barony Miniatures paper cogs for a future Pig Wars at sea game. The cogs are pretty cool.

I've tried but the lack of maneuverability with square rigged cogs really limits you unless you want to just throw any sense of reality to the winds! (pun intended)

The top two pictures are from the WSS game at Partizan – a real wargame which was played enthusiastically all day.

Was it realistic? I don't know … the sources are not very detailed so 'how it was' would be the subject of a good deal of speculation.

I have long considered building some 6mm-scale balsa/basswood cogs and work on some rules, but got sidetracked by the 16th century.

Lovely ships and scenics!

Lovely set of Cogs.

Been working on rules for medieval in 1/600 and 1/1200. They seem to be working OK :)

We had the WSS game at the Naval Wargames Show last year – it looks even more awesome in the flesh!

As the owner of three of the ships at the Partizan game (the rest belonged to the talented Mark Backhouse), yes we do game 28mm Medieval Naval!

The rules are an adaptation for WAB which were going to be in the Siege and Conquest book. They can now be downloaded at the Wargames, Soldiers and Strategy website for free. With a minor adaptation, I'm sure they could be used with other games (Clash of Empires, War & Conquest etc).

Yes we don't believe in static displays, participation all the way!

David, 1/600 sounds interesting. Drop us a line.

They all look like the Revell 'Hansa Kogge' model – is that correct Guy?

Yes the 'Hansa Kogge', now made by Zvesda I believe.

You've done a great job on them. I have one awaiting assembly so thank you for the inspiration ;-)

The real shame here is that, from what I have been able to research, about 2 years ago several (maybe all?) of the big dealers and model shops closed these out as low as £15.00 GBP in the UK and $16 USD in the US. Now, apparently, Revell has stopped producing the kit and those dealers that still have them are charging between $50 USD and $99 USD on eBay and between $75 USD and $100 USD in the retail online stores.

Yet another case of me finding something too late. Ah well, such is life. I can actually find the Zvezda versions slightly cheaper, but not much. So, back to the idea of scratch-building. They really aren't hard, but the Revell kit did have some nice details.

Still some knocking around for 30 Euros in Europe, not much use when you bung in postage to US I guess

Mad Guru25 Aug 2012 3:17 p.m. PST

Janner, if it's not too much trouble to ask, where in Europe exactly? I'm in Rome at the moment, and would buy several if they were within reach anywhere in this city.

Lovely ships, especially the sails. I love the topic too. Warwick was always a better tactician on sea than on land.

Shame about those cogs being discontinued.

For those looking for something less pricey, Old Glory has a descent cog.

Germany seems to be the best bet, I just picked one up off ebay. Didn't come up when I logged in and searched as normal, but only appeared on goggle.

There are still quite a few listed:

As an aside, does anyone know if the Thomas English Medieval ship would mix with the Kogge okay?

Major William Martin RM27 Aug 2012 8:16 p.m. PST

janner;

From a review that I read on one of the naval model web forums, the Zvezda and Revell kits are identical. Not sure who came first, but the Hansa Kogge models are exactly alike. The Teutonic cog and the Thomas (both from Zvezda) are also identical. The main difference between the latter two kits and the basic Kogge is the addition of a crows nest. There is a listing for the Thomas with shots of the sprues here:

The Maritime Museum in Wilhelmshaven has the last surviving actual cog…

janner06 Sep 2012 7:48 a.m. PST

Thanks Bill,

I've two of the Revell Kogges in process and wanted something slightly different as the flagship. Now to source some nice late 14th century galleys…
