I have several units of Kansu Braves, Chinese Muslims, for the Boxer rebellion.
These are painted like the plate in the Osprey Boxer Rebellion book, with red tunics and yellow and dark blue or black trim.

Were there alternate unform colors besides the predominantly red?

I am asking just so I can add more color to a Chinese army. grin

There is a colour illustration in the Osprey on Peking showing german and british sailors engaging turbaned regulars in what look to be bluish uniforms with yellow chest discs and trim. The Foundry China book refers to the red uniform above but with variants on the identification discs. It also mentions white uniforms with blue turbans as a possibility.

I think the regular Chinese army uniforms were blue – the discs are for rank/ID

The Kansu braves were recruited in their region hence the colours – I will check the library to see what else I can find

The Osprey plate description says that that particular guy had a red uniform until he was "issued" the regular uniform.
This implies a somewhat irregular uniform on the part of the "Yung".
I really like the red and yellow, the Falcon figures painted up so nicely. I would like to think that this is similar to the 18th C "as the colonel shall decide", and go with bright green, but with some historical justification. grin

The Kansu Braves are described as having 7 infantry regiments, 2 cavalry regiments and one artillery.
My newly found stash has some likely looking lads that can be made into artillerists.
What would the cavalry look like, and does anyone make something fitting in "true 25mm" scale?

Besides…

Foundary's book by heath quotes 3 sources/descriptions:
1 – Black turbans; bavk-edged jacket; trousers (not specified but red suggested) red trouser covers, white identification discs. artillery in violet embroided coats + blue trousers.
2.Photos show ifentity written on jacket (no discs), light coloured borders, floral patterned cloth headgear/turbans.
3. White cloathes and blue headgear/turbans
I can't say how well they will scale-match but Castaway Arts have promised to make some for me.
