I need recs for a particular type of monster. I use the D&D minis of the brain with beak and floating tendrils, not sure what they are called. I have a couple of metal similiars, not sure who makes them. But I need, for a scenario, to recommend to players any of a range of minis that will do. I'm after something that floats 10-20 feet above the ground -- and so ignores terrain -- and can grab enemies or prey below. Gasbag creatures of some sort would work.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

10-20 feet in what scale? In 15mm that's about an inch or more off the base; very doable. In 28mm that is closer to two inches off the base, which gets tricky.

I think CP Models makes a couple suitable for 15mm.

When you get to town tomorrow I will show you a couple I have been thinking of from Lone Gunman Games (old Thane's Games Cacodemons). I think those will work well. We can name them something different. Here is the link to the picture of them.

I think the D&D brain with beak is called a Grell. I have one of the Cacodemons – nice sculpt, if a little on the small side.

Definitely a Grell.

There's a pre-painted plastic that goes for a little over $6 USD apiece on Ebay:

The same piece, unpainted, from the Wrath of Ashardalon boardgame, goes for $3 USD apiece:

David, yes, those LG/ex-Thanes cocademons need to be integrated.

The D&D grells are what I have -- I think four of them.

I have two metal versions, neither of which is the CP ones pictured here -- which I like very much.

Thanks, all!

Hah! Doc, when you said you had the D&D Grells, I thought you meant the old official Ral Partha Grells, in metal:

Several other companies have done Grells and not-Grells over the years, including the afore-mentioned CP Models (and nice they are, too), Reaper, Citadel, and Archive.

I hadn't seen those RPs. I have one from Reaper, and also I think from Citadel.

The motive for all this is, I'm doing a campaign book for PRIDE, and one battle will be in the Gobbling Swamp, and Moonglade will have a unit of brainbeaks. We probably won't use a photo of anyone else's models, but I do want to include a written description of the unit, in game terms and also with what sort of miniatures players might use for it. Looks like there's a wide variety out there.

Sounds cool.

Ooooh, nice. Wonder if someone carries him in the USA?
