Has anyone ever thought of using plastic letter trays like these? link If so, I'd love to see how they could turn out. Thanks, Dan |

Hmm, what if you took two, turned one upside down and turned around. Then at least you'd have a box
I'd end up with an opening, and some plasticard cut out with windows shapes would at least add some variety

Hadn't thought about it, but it does look pretty good, and even comes with integral flooring. Add a see-through plexiglass facade, and you have a nice office building. A bit on the expensive side, but high-rise real estate is rarely cheap. |

Not too bad an idea, right?
link And they are sold in lots of different "window" styles, such as:
Some are front loading, others are side loading. Either way, if you stack them up into two columns and join them with the openings facing each other, I think you should be able to make a mega building out of them. And . . . if your game is supposed to play out on a multi-level SUBTERRANEAN facility, then get some WITHOUT "windows":
Used office supply stores must have boxes and boxes of them for cheap. Dan |

Yes, I have given some thought about it because I have a stack of them to use (like 20+). If you've seen my other terrain ideas for my Terminator Salvation game in 54mm, I just haven't worked them into the urban terrain yet. link The best place to buy them is at thrift stores and such, usually for pennies on the dollar. Check out your local dollar store the one near me almost always have in & out boxes like the one shown in this post. I have 6 of them for my various project. Wish I cold use them the way you suggest but I don't have the storage space to keep large building. Living in San Francisco has its drawback. If I Did make a high rise I wold have to do a full interior as well & I have enough projects on my plate right now. Great Idea tho |

I like the window design of the one in the chair best. |

Mako11, Here are some additional pics from other angles: link I wonder who made them. I'm sure they could be found somewhere else cheaper. Dan |

Morrigan: "Chop them up into ruins?" That's definitely an option. In fact, some of those trays have floors that look like grating. Cut to size and the add something to represent concrete for the floor area still in place. Dan |

Thanks for the link to the additional photos CC. That looks superb! Looks like you could use them for both 15mm and 25mm/28mm figs too, with a little effort. |

So, I guess no one has tried these plastic paper trays yet, so the can share with the rest of us what they did and how? Dan |

I tried using those exact trays for buildings for a large urban scenario. However, I ran into a slight difficulty. The Office Depot store manager made me pick up my "little army men" and leave the store immediately before he calls the police! |

I've picked up cheap/used ones at thrift stores, or even out of dust bins, but always figured I'd be cutting them up for ground terrain pieces. Some have round grooves that, turned over, look like semi-buried pipes. Just the thing for urban battlefields. I've seen the crates on David's site used with simple masking tape to choke down the windows. Quick paint, and they're not bad. I'm actually thinking that the letter tray high rises could work by butting two together; make walls on all four sides. Another idea is cut the connector tabs, and flip back and forth stacking. That way you'll have space large enough to reach in, even though they'd end up more 28mm height ceilings. Space between for pipes and the like, or even those crawl-able ventilation shafts all evil overlords despise. ;->= Edit: Apologies to Mr. Harold if the last is what he meant

I made a card on the laser with 6 to 32 mm boxes, and keep that in my wallet. Thinking of making some out of plastics if any one is interested. |

Wow! checking out that one guys builds are very impressive, guess I'll have to check out some PVC and Plexiglas. The "Tower" is rather cool too! I think I would have a few more open platforms between levels. All of these inspire me to build something to the next level. ;D |
