Im building Punic Roman & Carthaginian armies using Old Glory and Essex. This rules out Xyston due to the size issue. Can anyone recommend any Thureophoroi from either of these two ranges or from another range that will work with these?

So far I have only seen Thorakitai in the O.G. range.

Cheers.

Thanks Geoff! I know the Freikorps ranges vary in size, any idea how these stack up to Old Glory Mate?

OG and Essex both do Thracians which can be used though I think for OG they are mixed in with rhomphaia wielders.
QRF's Thracians are also good.

Just got some of the new Xyston Seleucid thureophoroi – size wise they may mix with OG reasonably well.

Thanx Swampster! All the pictures I have seen on the net show the Xyston dominating OG minis so Im wary of mixing.

As for Thracians, im not aware of any appearing in the Western Theater of the Punic War (what im currently gaming). Now that doesnt mean they didnt, but im kinda more set on more Greek looking Thureophoroi.

I did locate a code at Black Hat that has 2 poses. So far as I recall these mix okay with OG.

I'd recommend a mix of Essex MPA138,MPA96,and MPA 4

Tarantella, thanks so much for posting specific codes!

138, 96 & MPA3 all look perfect. MPA4 is kinda an odd pose (none combatish). Maybe the other figures in that pack look better?

Old Glory Throakital on the new website no longer has an item number. It is hard for me to order without the numebrs.

You might look at the Maccebeans in captured armor.

I thought the Old Glory line was quite a bit larger than Essex. Not a problem if on a base of their own. Does Corvus Belli have anything suitable? Their Romans match up well with Essex ones.

Mpas 3,4 and 96 are single design pose packs and Mpa 138 has 4 designs with the unseen one being a variant of the crouching first one with shield parallel rather than perpendicular to the body.

Mpa 95 is the armoured type (again single figure pose). Also from that range Mpa 70 is a weird unsuitable type with horned helmet and round shield but depending on the quantity of such troops actually needed perhaps Mpa 5, Mpa 132 and 133 would give a few unhelmeted figures for variation though the tunics of the latter two differ somewhat too with Mpa 132 having a fringe and Mpa 133 being split on both sides.

Always check Essex figure descriptions carefully for mentions of Ass. or (assorted).

As you note the Xyston Thureophoroi are large, however the first Hoplite codes are smaller.

I used the unarmored hoplites and bought the thureos shields separately. Worked well with OG anyway not sure about Essex.

I've had a compare of the new Xyston figures and some Old Glory 15s – I think some might be happy to mix them, especially as the base thickness lessens the height difference. However, I think I would agree with you and not mix them.
The QRF figures are a bit smaller than Xyston and look okay next to OG I think the thureophoroi pictured above are a bit less chunky than OG figures whereas the QRF Thracians have a bit more heft to them, possibly due to the cloaks

"As for Thracians, im not aware of any appearing in the Western Theater of the Punic War (what im currently gaming). Now that doesnt mean they didnt, but im kinda more set on more Greek looking Thureophoroi."

I doubt there would be a huge difference in a 3rd century Thracian with thureos and thureophoroi from anywhere else. The main difference between the QRF Thracians and the thureophoroi shown above is the cloaks worn by the Thracians. Cloaks are shown on non-Thracians on, e.g., the Sidon stelae so wearing them doesn't rule out a figure.

On the whole, there may not have been many east Med thureophoroi in the West Med – the Italians, Celts and Spaniards may well have filled a similar function and been more available and probably cheaper!

The thorakitai are SS11. You have to go all the way to the final page to see the code.

Other possible ranges are Black Hat link (nice figures though only two poses) and Donnington Originals link HF04, 05, 07, 31.
