Of possible interest.

Apart from any trailer, it was imho the most important SF movie of all times.
Do you agree?

Yes. At least to me, I was in a packed theater when it just came out, 15 years old. Huge impression on my life.

I was a teenager too and remember that I went with all my budies to see it, but the only seats file I can paid was the first one.
Imagine when I see the monkey first time…
It was HUGE.
Then I saw it a dozen of times or more.

I saw the original, on a BIG screen, back in the day, when they actually had those.

It was a very visually stunning movie for the time, and I loved the music.

It was a very good movie, but I'm not sure it is one of the most important Sci-Fi films of all time though.

Then again, I'm not sure which ones, other than perhaps the 1st and 2nd Star Wars movies, that were (e.g. Episodes 4 and 5).

Like in 2001, with its stunning visuals, I still remember the opening scene where the up close view of the Star Destroyer just goes on and on, providing a nice sense of how large the vessel really was.

Lots of other great visuals in the first two movies as well, e.g. the double-sun, sunset on Tatooine; the rebel fighters flying past the red planet to attack the Death Star; the search for Luke and Han, from the cockpit of the Snowspeeder, etc.

I was pretty young the first time I saw it. I understood the movie a greal deal more after I read the book and watched it again. Still never tire of it.

Will watch anything directed by Kubrick or Kurosawa.

The most boring sci-fi movie ever. It could have been told in 30 minutes. Too many (usually old) people buy into its hype while wearing rose colored glasses.

opinions are like……ELBOWS…yeah, that's it….ELBOWS! (more PC!!!)….

I couldn't wait for the movie to come out back in '68 and my dad took me to see it on the BIG SCREEN. I still remember the almost subliminal 'rumbling' when the first strains of music came out of the theater speakers….felt the cold chills run down my spine as the logo appeared over the moon as the sun moved up past it…..

I got the book and then the ORIGINAL 'Moonbus' and tried to build my own mini 'space pod' and USS Discovery….and even Aries 1B….I got the soundtrack album for Christmas…and over the years I've collected the other 2001 books, 2010, 2061 and 3001 and the 'Lost Worlds of 2001' (previous incarnations of the written 2001 by ACC)….and it's remained a favorite of mine and a lot of great memories for me as well….

Even though I was only 13 at the time, I found the movie both exciting and 'deep' at the same time….and have found something 'new' every time I've watched it.

But to quote Gene Hackman as 'Lex Luthor' in the first 1978 Superman movie….'some folks can read WAR AND PEACE and come away thinking of it as a simple adventure novel, while others can read the ingredients on a chewing gum wrapper and discover the secrets of the Universe…'

viva la difference and to each their own…..

'I don't know if it's ART…but I like it'….Jack Nickelson as the Joker in original Batman movie

A great movie, most important – not sure what that would mean, it is not my favorite (Star Wars still gets the nod for that), Planet of the Apes (original), or Andromeda Strain I would give a more important award if there were such a thing.

jpattern228 Jul 2012 10:56 a.m. PST

I saw it in the theater when it came out, too. Mind-blowing.

If you look at who worked on it and who was influenced by it – and not just in film, but in many other media – I honestly don't see how you can NOT call it one of the most important sci-fi films ever made. You might not like it, you might be bored to tears by it, but you really can't deny its importance and influence: link

Just one example: Douglas Trumbull, who cut his teeth on the visual effects for "2001," went on to handle the visual effects for "The Andromeda Strain," "Silent Running," "Close Encounters," "Star Trek: The Motion Picture," and "Blade Runner." Would he have worked on those films without "2001"? Would the effects have looked as good?

Roosta28 Jul 2012 1:15 p.m. PST

Yeah,an all time great. I saw it when it was re-released after Star Wars and it just blew me away.

billthecat28 Jul 2012 2:10 p.m. PST

I wouldn't do that if I were you, Dave.

Love the part with HAL, the rest is 'meh'… still a very important film in terms of sci-fi film making…

Cosmic Reset28 Jul 2012 3:45 p.m. PST

For me, yes. I was very young when I saw the original release, and it captivated me. I watch it 3-4 times per year now, and it is still special every time.

Howler28 Jul 2012 6:58 p.m. PST

I never understood it. Not sure if I ever will.

Lost Wolf, if you're really interested, Wiki provides a good plot summary: link

Gearhead05 Aug 2012 11:33 a.m. PST

I loved it when I was a kid, but saw it again as an adult after many years. Mrs Gearhead was bored out of her skull, and even I had to admit that I didn't find myself enjoying it as much. Still good overall, but bits of it were just too dang pretentious, and other bits just felt like they were showcasing; you could almost hear Kubrik fapping off-camera.

Looonnnnggggg winded movie. But that can be real good if yor in the mood for it. I saw it as a 15 yr old teen on TV and got blown away by the concepts of it. Every time I have seen it since (dozens) I came away with deeper understanding. It's no Star Wars (ep 4 which I saw in the theater at 8 yrs old)but an entirely different animal.
Roddenberry loved it so much he tried to copy it in Star Trek: the Motionless Picture. Didn't mix well.
2001 is NOT phase 2 Trek.

Ya 2001 is SLOW. But that's the kind of flick it is. The link to the modern day Bay preview was hilarious and really outrageously pretentious for the movie – Hollywood today haha. Forgive me, but I would love to see a Hollywood version of 2001 with more action. Guess I pretty much saw it all in the preview…..
