Still awaiting its base, but that wont be dry till tomorrow!

Zvezda hull and turret, mated with a Trumpeter mantlet, Revell cupola and an RB Barrel… Oh and an AB crewman!

Why the kitbash? Is there a problem with parts of the Zvezda kit?

Why the kitbash? Is there a problem with parts of the Zvezda kit?

The Zvezda Tiger has its gun barrel and mantlet cast as a single piece. On all four models I bought this had led to serious warping of the barrel. I cant say whether this is a constant problem or just on the batch I bought from.

Due to the fact I had the RB barrels anyway to replace the plastic barrels (I do that with most things) and a spare Trumpeter mantlet, I replaced the entire thing as the Trumpeter mantlet was also better defined.

Finally I had to replace the cupola as the Zvezda one is cast with the hatch closed (and also added smoke dischargers as the Zvezda has none).

All in all, I wasnt overly impressed by the Zvezda offering. Its snap together construction is a pain (many holes for locating joints needed drilling out and the pegs had a distinct tendancy to snap off). That said some of the detail is nicely down in parts (though the turret hatches lack definition)and the running gear assembles well, though the instruction are a little vague at times. Sadly I have another three sat looking fornlorn… I have two more Trumpter kits too so I will likely use them next.

Convert one of the spares to a Berg Tiger?

Piers,

"231" has come up really well but I am surprised it has been so labour intensive – up to now I have read a lot of very positive comments about these Zvezda kits.

Hornswoggler,

Me too. Hence why I bought four of them after reading the same reviews! I may have a bogey production batch, certainly none of the reviews mention the flash and filled in plug holes that I have had issues with.

Must say I was rather dissapointed, though I knew the hatch was moulded closed, so I was always going to replace that part.

I shall do another…

Sweet paintwork – I especially like the 'worn & used' look you have given the Tiger!
