Confined playing space, ocasional bumps and people passing by. What can still give a good game?

The wife and I enjoyed multiple games of Battleline by GMT without interruption and had much fun over 8 hour train trips.

Havent tried a thing else yet. Shogi could be a good one but you would need a travel board inlieu of the traditional board.

Command & Colors is another one that might work but lugging the board around could be a drag.

Any thoughts, experience?

Battleline is a great game, I would also suggest in order
Lost Cities
Carcassonne
Cold War CIA vs KGB
Hera and Zeus
Hive
Hellas

My wife and I have played all of these and all are good.
If you want more suggestions for bigger games that cannot be played on a train let me know one of those are 1960.

Manoeuvre if you like Napoleonic. By GMT games.

Playing 'avoid the nutter' is often necessary….

American trains must be a LOT emptier than British ones!

The VASSAL module for this game is excellent. While I prefer the tactile game with actual miniatures, for a trip the digital version might suffice.

A good idea is to take one of those cheap kids' art packs that comes in a 9x12 plastic suitcase, empty it, and put two 8.5x11 magnetic sheets in the bottom. Then you can reproduce your favorite board on top of the sheets and use small magnets as pawns. I've done a bunch of games up like that – even made surrogates for mini battles for games like Space:1889 and 1st ed D&D.

Other than that, my old lady and I play card games on planes and trains.

Is the Vassal of C&C available for the Droid yet?

kreoseus223 Jul 2012 4:16 p.m. PST

I heard about 2 guys who played 6mm HOTT on a train. They had a briefcase with the terrain in one side and the figures, rules, dice etc in the other. Two boards held everything in place and became the playing board.

I don't know. Java 5 is the primary requirement for the engine. The module should be platform agnostic.

Find an old copy of melee. We still use that for long airplane and car trips.

My humble suggestion would be the ancient and mystical Chinese game of… Animal Chess!

Available in deluxe, overpriced version:

auction

or the more understated travel version:

There also a fantasy game and a Battletech game similar to Ace of Aces. Trick is finding them.

Up Front. Played it on planes, trains and in an RV andthe back of a van (automobiles).
Used to have a wonderful little magnetized travel chess board box, long gone now.
And, of course, an iPad is wonderful for travel games.
