Which do you prefer?
Really sell me on your choice!

A)Napoleonics
B)Snappy Nappy

I assume you mean Foundry's "Napoleon" ?

It would be hard to imagine two more different games. The former is is very small-scale tactical game, the latter is a very large-scale grand tactical game.

That said, I think it's safe to say that Foundry's "Napoleon" was one of the most spectacular disasters in recent game publishing.

Niether really float my boat, and you couldn't have pick two more dissimilar scales.
'Napoleon' is a real dogs breakfast. I purchased a copy and off loaded it soon after.
A friend of my recently purchased 'Snappy Nappy' and we will probably play a game soon.
He likes the look of them.

One has a rather unfortunate name.

The other is simply unfortunate in toto.

I don't know or own either but from all the scuttle butt, I'd have to go with Snappy Nappy. It seems to be sort of a campaign set where you can march forces to the battle and fight. It really plays up the the ability of a general to march forces to the battlefield and allows all sorts of flank marches without abstracting it off table like many other wargames do. It's going for a totally different experience.

Time to throw in another.

EMPIRE III!!!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooooooo

doug redshirt22 Jul 2012 11:47 p.m. PST

Luckily nowadays I assume Empire means the evil Empire in Star Wars. If it was Empire the miniature rules, I. Would suffer flashbacks and start foaming at the mouth, while rolling on the floor.

"Napoleon" is unplayable as written. I know of a group that worked out their own errata, but even so I cannot imagine a worse game just because of all the clutter on the table from the cards, if nothing else.

Snappy Nappy is way too gimmicky for me. There's really nothing that truly reflects the 'feel' of Napoleonic warfare in it. It's biggest drawback is that you use a paper roster to track all of those units! If there was a way to mark them instead it would be better. However – Snappy Nappy had one amazing thing that NO other ruleset ever had….its own music! It came with a CD containing themed music composed specifically for the purpose. I don't know if you can still get the CD, but it's pretty cool to play it during your games.

And Empire should not be thown into this. That is a brilliant set of rules that only suffers from players' conceptions, not design.

The only time I have ever played a game of any sort, including physical contact games, and quit because I had a headache brought on by the game so bad that tears were in my eyes was Empire.

Snappy Nappys are fun, but roll hot and you are unstoppable.

Having never played the other I cant comment on those.

One last comment is that Empire ruined our gaming group from ever playing Napoleonics again. Much to several members regret.

Napoleon's bricoles is the people's choice.

SECURITY MINISTER CRITTER23 Jul 2012 4:24 a.m. PST

I still have Empire One!

I. Would suffer flashbacks and start foaming at the mouth, while rolling on the floor.

That happens when I think back on my first time with Warhammer FB.

Clay the Elitist23 Jul 2012 6:46 a.m. PST

"Having never played the other I cant comment on those." No doubt, as the rules are UNPLAYABLE. It's difficult to find someone who's played "Napoleon" for that reason. I tried to organize a game, but gave up the attempt.

If your gaming group was ruined it wasn't because of a ruleset.

TMPWargamerabbit23 Jul 2012 7:57 a.m. PST

Never seen a game of those rules. In some small way maybe a piece of information about either set.

As luck would have it, I happen to have one of the songs from the Snappy Nappy CD on my website.

Snappy Nappy is really aimed at the very Grand Tactical scale. The rules worked fine for us when we play tested a fairly large game; at this level, it is necessary to accept some level of abstraction for sure.

The real reason I got them, though was the "Campaign in a Day" concept that Russ Lockwood (author) pioneered and reported on in MWAN; I WILL do this some day at least once, hopefully within the next 2-3 years – just way too fun to pass up. just need enough equally crazy… er, *inspired* players to make it work!
