There's a new battle report regarding the French on Space:1889 Mars on my blog:

I wasn't able to finish my Tirailleurs Martiens in time for the game, so we are using British Martian proxies.

Really like the red aquarium plants for your Martian terrain.

nice looking forces and board

Redroom and Bat Cave – Thanks!

The red aquarium plants were an experiment.

I need more, much more.

Splendid looking game Sir.I was buying plastic plants the other day (sale on at the local Pets at Home) but I've mainly gone for blue small leafed ones to give a better contrast to my red back ground.

Keep up the good work Sir.

What did this 'plowed field' start out as? Some kind of floor tile?

kmfrye23 Jul 2012 8:27 a.m. PST

DLIVSF – gotta love aquarium plants for depicting other-worldy fauna. I have a reddish ground mat that I'm going to use this week for the refight.

Lion – those are JR Miniatures 15mm scale plowed fields, cut in half diagonally to make them look "odd". Some interesting zigzag effects can be had that way.

They come in singles, brown, yellow and green at about US $10 USD apiece.

I still need to dye the raw edges with a brown brush pen/marker.

The inspiration was the map of a Martian City in the Sky Galleons of Mars boxed game. The crop fields are depicted as triangular.

Best regards,
Keith F.

I suggest you should add a Legionaire unit to possibly make this just a bit more balanced for the French player.

The Legion is fine, but you see them so often. For an exotic French unit of light infantry we've added Turcos to our game -- colorful and interesting uniforms and great troops.

That's pretty much my thinking too, Frank. The Legion's great, maybe a little too great. Think I'm going to add a troop of Chasseurs d'Afrique with dismounts.

That should set the steppe tiger amongst the gashants.

Keith F.
