Hi,

Long time lurker, first time poster…

I'm beginning to collect 6mm modern and sci-fi miniatures, and am wondering if there is a basing for vehicles that is considered "standard," much like DBA/DBM basing is fairly standard in ancients and medieval miniatures?

I know some leave their vehicles without bases, but I do want to put mine on bases.

Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Bad_Mood

I base all my vehicles on 20mm x 40mm bases. some of the smallest armoured cars can look a little strange but I like it.

Howdy and welcome Bad Mood,

Honestly most games assume you don't have bases.

and a lot of smaller 6mm vehicles look odd on the same bases as larger ones!

So go crazy with your basing :D

What rules are you looking to play with?

Ben.

I don't think there are specified base sizes I will base command on slightly larger bases – ie Panzer 4 and a Kublewagen or in modern terms say a Spartan and a landrover.

Have a look at my WWII:

I used to leave mine unbased but now put them on 3/4" round "bases" that cost exactly a penny each. It has two great advantages, the smallest minis are far easier to spot when dropped or lost in table clutter, and I can label them underneath – helpful for knowing what is what.

Depends on the "scale" of the rules – if 1 model = 1 vehicle, then most rules don't have a basing standard, but ones where one model = 1 platoon frequently do. 30mm square is probably the nearest thing to a standard there (Command Decision and Spearhead spring to mind.) To be honest I'd just stick to whatever you think looks good.

I put my 6mm stuff on 30mm x 30mm, sometimes deeper for bigger vehicles. Works for most rulesets, especially the one base = 1 platoon/company/battalion type.

I use the small FoW bases. They work well.

Hi Everybody!

Thanks for the fast replies!

I'm going to experiment with some of your suggested base sizes and see what looks good.

Mainly I'm basing the vehicles to help protect the models (especially the turrets and gun barrels) from whatever accidental abuse I can. I recently acquired some used GHQ modern British tanks and the barrels are so badly mangled they may be beyond saving.

Also, as I've poked around looking at various websites, I just like the look of some of the basing and think it might be fun to come up with different schemes for different platoons.

For rules, I'm diving into sci-fi first and am reading through Strike Legion, and may try out the old Heavy Gear Tactical rules for smaller skirmish-style games. I also plan on picking up Future War Commander and Cold War Commander in the near future, as I've read good things about those.

Thanks again for all your suggestions! TMP is a great resource.

For the scifi vehicles you might want to try 30x40mm bases as they tend to be quite large models compared to historical 6mm ones.

I base my sci-fi on 25mm x 40mm:

I plan on using either 40mm frontage or 60mm frontage bases, but I've not decided which for sure yet. Why? Because I have tons of them in sheet metal on hand. I plan on doing multiple vehicles per stand, though.

I base mine on steel and cardboard as they are easier to store in a magentised box. Also the base helps to protect the barrels on modern tanks (esp GHQ and CNC) from getting damaged.

Go for basing. I know I've seen some lovely games with great models, unbased on lovely terrain, but for practicality in use and storage I think basing is worth it. I used 40x20 for vehicles, 40x40 for HQs, round bases for FAC etc. I've just started putting my artillery on 40x40 as well.

Plus, if you base you can play with the scenics!
