Just finished painting this formation of old Heinrichsen Macedonians. Figures originally issued in 1921.

Envy!!! Great looking minis… I mean flats – always loved them.

I love 'em too, but the only ones I can afford to own are the old AWI flats sold from comic book ads in the 1960's. They are actually very nice figures, even though they did not measure up to what the picture in the ad suggested. I have about 3 sets now--enough to do a real Old School-type game. And I can hear the hoots of derision from my buddies already…

Looks like they stepped out of a painting! Fantastic stuff!

Lovely; I agree that they look like something from a picture!

Thanks, guys !

Bumbydad, actually they aren't so expensive on a per figure basis, around a Euro each. The problem is Heinrichsen brings the old figures back into production only in batches and don't sell individual figures. The "Macedonier Fussvolk" set contains other things such as command figures, slingers and guys wielding swords (Hypaspists ?). So yeah, building a full phalanx from scratch would be expensive. In my case, I'd already bought some phalangites on eBay here and there so two sets was enough (plus I get another formation of slingers out of it).

I have also been tempted by those comic book flats and suspect they'd look pretty good painted.

So nice.

Great stuff, Trim …

I'm afraid my own refurb project isn't quite there yet – so the Greeks and Persians had to do the job as 'work in progress' for a Plataea game at COW at the weekend.

That said, I am a convert – these figures are a joy to paint, and although I have some techniques to refine other people seem to enjoy them, too (something I think we've all missed out on for too long) …

Trim,

In case you do decide to take the plunge on the comic book flats, I have to say they are not equally desirable. Scale is not consistent: cavalry in particular is too small compared to the infantry. That said, the AWI figures are very nice in all respects, although not all troop types are included in the range.

The other sets are uneven, to say the least.

The ACW figures aren't bad, but because of the sculpting, are very prone to breakage (i.e. thin legs, not well connected to their bases). Moreover, the guns are awful, and there really isn't much use for multiple, undersized copies of Monitors and Virginias. The nicest figures are the supply/medical wagons, which I have hijacked over to my AWI set up.

On the other hand, the Romans are very robust figures; unfortunately, each and every one is fully equipped as a Legionary, including the archers and slingers! There are a lot of chariots which aren't too useful. You do get a bunch of toy-like catapults which fire marble-sized rounds; these are amusing but not exactly useful either.

By far the worst are the WWII sets, which are the cheapest and most plentiful (what a surprise). The sculpting job on the infantry is very poor. The vehicles and planes _might_ be useful as game markers of some kind, but otherwise the set is just not worth it, regardless of price, even as Old School artifacts.

When I get myself together and paint more AWI figs I will post some pictures. My painting efforts do not hold a candle to yours, though!

Just brilliant, as ever.
