With period defined as per the TMP message boards or, in other words, counting Ancients as one period, Medieval as another, and counting Fantasy and Sci-Fi as separate "periods," etc. what is your single favorite period for gaming?

Without a doubt medieval. Either 12th C or HYW periods. Then Ancients (specifically early Rome and the late Empire), 3nd would be WWII, then the Warhammer games.

Depends on the week.
Ancients, WWII, Victorian, pirates, sci-fi are my favorites.

Midpoint06 Jul 2012 5:21 p.m. PST

In terms of toys owned/painted it is Napoleonic. In terms of reading, must be WW2.

Choosing one may be hard, but I'm curious what people will choose if they have to choose just 1 instead of 5.

ancientsgamer07 Jul 2012 10:35 a.m. PST

If I had to choose one, it would be cheating. I would say pre-gunpowder era is my favorite but this covers a HUGE time period ;-) Narrowing it down further would be Roman Empire and High Medieval period (just before widespread use of hand guns). I do like chariot war periods as a sub genre too.

Then it would be Napoleonic, Lace Wars, Renaissance, WWII and ACW (probably in this order). BUT I like sub-genres in between such as WWI air and most naval battle settings of any era. My answers, with the exception of air and naval, is that I prefer combined arms games where infantry and cavalry interact. In the case of latter periods, I want infantry and armor to interact in a meaningful way. Don't get me wrong, I like micro-armor but my study of history concludes that infantry is still important and gaming that doesn't take this into account isn't proper (air and naval combat as an exception of cours)

dandiggler09 Jul 2012 10:30 a.m. PST

Pike and Shotte, Pirates, and 20th century.

John the Greater09 Jul 2012 12:41 p.m. PST

Paraguayan War (oops, no board for that). Then ACW followed by ancients followed by Renaissance.

At conventions I play whatever tickles my fancy that I would never play at home (like ancient naval, wild west, pulp, and a few things that defy descriptions)
