My son, at college in a remote location (that does mostly have paved roads), is taking up 40K so he an game with his RA. He bought a Dark Eldar Army of some sort (from the RA) and is reading up on it. I would like to scratchbuild him something for that army. So, people with 40K experience, what Dark Eldar piece fills you with awe and dread when someone fields it against you? Are there things in the books that there aren't models for, so I could extrapolate a design?

I am not firm in the Dark Eldar codex, but afaik the style is pretty unique and most codex units are accounted for. Perhaps you can convert a fighter to a bomber.

You should go over to warseer to find a higher density of 40k-players and perhaps project logs of existing conversions.

I find the Talos to be a pretty fierce unit. At worst it draws a lot of fire. Plus it looks awesome.

I'd have to agree, the current Talos is probably the most fierce and bizzar looking model they have.

Any of that haemoniculi (sp) stuff and wargear. Wracks are hard to kill and look like the baddie out of The Cell. Any way to start with some pain tokens and anything with quick ways to get them like the chronos engine should be considered too.

Then there are wych cults, the regular guys… It's a codex that can go many ways and cater to personal tastes. And good models.

If you're looking for something really unusual, there were some neat conversions done in 3rd edition 40K. They wouldn't be 'street legal' but a fun opponent rather than a jerk would likely allow someone to make up some rules and use them.

One was called a Rampage and was made using two raiders:

Again, no entry for it in the current rules, but it was fun to make and it looks wicked.

Another one I never got around to making was the 'Demilune' that was displayed in a Citadel Journal.

I think either one would be a cool centerpiece for a DE army.

Try replicating something from this page:

Your son will be able to use it in a game without having to explain why he didn't use the standard GW model for it. Plus the FW models all have their own rules, too.

Thanks for the help, guys. Sifting through the reams of 40K stuff with no background would have been about as pleasant as having a Dark Eldar Cronos suck your soul out leaving an empty husk (right?).

I think I will take a couple of shots at Talos and Cronos figures, probably with replacalble appendages. Just so I am sure, the organic body in the floating turtle of pain and death is a regular sized person, correct?

I may also take a shot at a Tantalus vehicle. I got some Dark Eldar Reavers(? the pirate guys) for cheap and made some space pirates. I like making floating vehciles.

Appears to be much larger. That is a large flying base it's mounted on.

FWIW, I play DE, and I think the Talos and Cronos are terrible. They're too slow in an army that's all about moving fast. The Razorwing and/or Voidraven flyers are good, especially with the new rules.

OK, so what is the diameter of the large flying base, so I can get a reference?

I remember that Demilune model. My friend had a Dark Eldar army and he wanted one. It required to Raiders and an Eldar Falcon to build. He had me build it for him and he let me have all the left over bits. It was very easy to build. I thought it was very cool at the time, but now looking back at it, it pales in comparison to the new Dark Eldar range. It doesn't look half as good as something that could be built from the current models.
