I am modelling the 1stKGL Hussars (perry figs) and I Really need help with a quick way of painting horses black. My usual horse technique is black undercoat, brown, black inc wash and then the odd highlight in lighter brown. I understand the 1stKGL used black horses so I would really like to give it a go. I have allready undercoated the horses in black primer- I'm also worried about diferenciating between the saddle straps and the horse itself etc. All help tips are welcome- All the best NB |

TMP link Prime with a base tone in acrylic (if your clever you can get some highlights in as well at this stage), load it up with a shade tone in oil, wipe with makeup sponge (toilet paper works too)
done. I can't even count how many horses I have done that way
tho' now I would prolly use an airbrush.. just not sure of the technique to use. |

For painting horses of all colors, I find this a really helpful guide: link Part 7, 8, and 9, "Painting Ponies," parts I, II, and III are what you want. Peter |

Any references as to the 1st KGL Hussars had black horses? I plan to do this in the future
so I'm quite interested. Any other horse colours I should know of except the usual that the heavies had black and the lights had brown, bay

I tried the following tonight (I am really happy at the moment the horse is ok and the Hussar is painted to my normal standard i.e nothing special but I have finished the first miniature of a unit I've wanted to model for over a year and a half!) Black undercoat- GW Driad Bark- Badab Black Wash- The dark brown has paid off- a little less flat than just black, my question is do I highlight in lighter brown or grey- surely if I use brown the horse will look further away from black, if I use grey will the brown suddenly look odd? Thanks again NB |

Cracck- I actually don't have a reference to hand to offer but I am away from my book case at the moment and I will have to wait until tomorrow- If memory serves as the 1st of three hussar regiments recognised as elite light cav (and therfore the more recognisably elite regiment- often used for escort and special "honored" assignments) they adopted black horses as they were rarer and marked them out from there counterparts both in a fashion sense and militarily. Hey I could be wrong! NB |

your method sounds fine to me.. try black, highlit with Vallejo black grey then washed with a thin black
many black horse are really dark brown, either because of hair colouring or bleaching by sunlight,, I knew a wonderful black shetland, ca;;ed bucky, that had gone quite chocolate from exposure to the sun.. |

My black horse recipe: primer GW black spray primer, base coat VMC 822 (SS Camo Black Brown), wash with GW black wash, let thoroughly dry and highlight with VMC 882 again. And yes black horses are really very dark brown most of the time. Somebody told me that some black horses are really very dark blue, hence the blue shining you sometimes get on very black horses. Don't know what to think about that though, seems weird no: a blue horse
but still this person was very knowledgeable on equestrian matters |

I always mix a Khaki into black to highlight eg. citadel Khemri Brown – sadly no longer avalable. then I wash with Badab Black, then a wash of gryphone sepia, sounds strange I know, but it works for me. I love the matte-ness of the old GW washes |
