Note: I don't want the real, legal answer for any particular jurisdiction. I could (and should) look that up for myself if that were my intent. I was just musing on this topic with my daughter as she prepares to go off to college and am looking for the kind of considered opinions and wild conjectures that the Internet is apt to provide
well, I'm off to retrofit some of my 19th century miniatures now

I imagine if it is legal to carry a taser, you can carry an umbrella taser. Also, since the police will list anything used in a fight as a weapon, to me, the issue is rather moot. |

I'm no legal eagle, not even a legal beagle. But it seems you're not talking about anything lethal. In America, self defense is usually well within one's rights. I would protect myself, and/or my family first. Let others worry about the rest. But you mentioned your daughter. As I assume you mean for her to carry the dinkus, I'd check things out more thoroughly. Especially as you probably have the time. It would be a shame to try to do the right thing, just to have some kitchen hawk try to put her away. |

Only if all the stuff the Penguin uses is considered a concealed weapon. You probably need to ask The Batman about that. |
Mako11 | 03 Jul 2012 8:16 p.m. PST |
My counter-argument in court would be that it isn't a concealed weapon, since it is obviously so large, and highly visible. I'm guessin' there is no prior court ruling in the location where it might be used, so you should get away with that the first time. Of course, I thought OJ, and Casey Anthony would both be convicted as well, in slam dunk rulings, so as you can see, court cases are crap shoots, usually with the odds stacked in the favor of the ones with the more expensive, and/or better liars, er lawyers. |

A sword umbrella is, (wanna buy one?) so I assume a taser is too. |

There is this. So I guess it depends on what state you live in. Robert Zap Self Defense Cane with Flashlight "Steady yourself, light your way and be ready to protect yourself if needed! This ZAP Stun Cane features an adjustable walking cane, an ultra-bright LED flashlight and a stun gun with an unheard of 1-million volt charge that will knock down any attacker. The cane has a weight capacity of 250 lbs and is adjustable from 32" to 36". They'll think it is just a cane until it is too late! It is even rechargeable and includes a wall charger and carrying case. Note: This item cannot ship to HI, MA, MI, NJ, NY, RI, WI, PA." link

A nice design. Not as good as the secret, poison-tipped ones the Russians use, but pretty state of the art, nonetheless, for a non-lethal variant. |

Very much a case of 'Check with the local Police Deparment'. Where I live you would be looking at up to 14 years in the pokey on at least 2 counts with something like that – disguised weapon and Taser-like weapon. |
badwargamer | 04 Jul 2012 3:05 a.m. PST |
If you're in the uk a taser that shoots barbs is a firearm so you can't have one. There isn't a concealed weapon law, but it is a weapon so would be an 'offensive weapon' as it is 'made, used or adapted' as a weapon. I guess it wouldn;t be a great weapon as would be awkward to use in the wind. Also, what happenes whne the wind breaks the umbrella bit? Would be expensive to replace the whole thing all the time. |

Well, my first thought was that if she has to arm herself then what kind of college is she attending? Regardless, colleges have strict no weapons of any kind policies, so the issue really is moot. Neither I nor my students can pack heat or shivs of any kind, including tazer parasols I would assume. |

I don't know about tasers, but I work on a college campus and I see lots of girls with cans of pepper spray hanging from their key chains. You're best bet would be to email the campus police at her school and ask. Email will leave a convenient record in case the campus police (or off campus police) get cranky with her about carrying a weapon. CPBelt, policies vary considerably between states and universities. I know of one school in the South where students are allowed to have hunting weapons in their cars but not their dorm rooms, and at the state school I work at I am allowed to bring a loaded firearm on campus as long as I leave it in my car AND have a concealed weapon permit. |

Badwargamer, In the UK, all electrical stunners (apart from some cattle-prods) are classed as Section 5 Firearms, along with other things such as CS sprays. |

Depends upon the college. Apparently some now permit people to carry handguns. Pepper spray, if permitted, would probably be best. If it'll stop a grizzly, it'll stop most humans, except those hopped up on some drugs. Even multiple gunshot rounds don't always stop the latter, immediately. |

Exactly ! And once you've zapped the clown, run away and you won't have to explain what happened to the police. |

Mako11, regular pepper spray won't work on bears. You need special bear pepper spray (and I am not making this up). It's stronger, comes in larger cans, and is illegal to use on people in some areas. Don't head into the woods (or the tundra) thinking regular pepper spray will work. |
