Should search out the works of J.R. Hale. His "The Military Organisation of a Renaissance State : Venice C. 1400 To 1617" is a book you can't not have ! There is a collection of papers – Renaissance Venice, of which he was the editor – has some superb stuff. "War, Culture, and Society in Renaissance Venice : Essays in Honour of John Hale" is also a must. |

Hale and Norwich are great recommendations. I might add, if you want insight into the workings of the Renaissance state, Robert Finlay's 'Politics in Renaissance Venice' (if you can find a copy)
or if you want a readable overview of Venetian history, F.C. Lane's 'Venice: a Maritime Republic' Phil |

How could I have not recalled Lane straight off? Another vote for F.C. Lane's 'Venice: a Maritime Republic', a splendid volume. |
