Hello, just wanted to share some photos of two very small naval pieces I've just finished, if anyone's interested. They are a 14 gun cutter with studding sails, and a rowed pinnace.

Incidentally, the latter touches on a certain curiosity of mine. I had wondered if it would be worth while trying to add crew members in 1/1200 scale. I figured maybe just 1mm tall pieces of wire, painted blue or red or white to suggest uniforms, maybe capped with a fleshy dab for a head. Well, the pinnace actually has crew molded in to it, though I think they must be rather out of scale.

What do you guys think? Has anyone ever tried adding their own 1/1200 crews in to anything?

As usual, lots more pictures on my blog at jwhitegallery.blogspot.com

They are wonderfully painted ships and teh sea is great.

Could you share the colours used for the sea?
Thanks

Thank you rct75001. The sea bases are painted with just some random acrylics that I picked up in an art store a while ago, and now just use because I have them. Any brand is fine, and the colors are a basic navy blue, medium green, and white.

First I mix up equal proportions of the blue and green, and add a drop or two of white. That's my base color. I add progressively more white for one or two rounds of highlights, and then a last round of pure white. It's too bright at this point and doesn't have enough depth, but then I brush on copious amounts of Citadel's blue wash, which tints the highlights and settles nice and dark in the recesses – darker than you think it will when it's wet.

After the model is in place I paint the wake around it, with a progression from light blue to white painted on in quick stabbing motions and draggings, and then the whole thing gets a couple coats of glossy varnish – I use Poly Scale/ Floquil for that.

Hope that helps! – James

Thanks James – explanation copied and stored safely until later in the year when the Langtons come out.

I'm painting a couple of Langton 1:1200 ships now. Your's are truly beautiful.
