Is it me or the miniatures for the upcoming game from Fantasyflight are 'Star Wars:X-Wing Miniatures' are a bit on the expensive side? I understand that the minis will come painted and with lots of stuff, like cards and whatever, but it looks like one single, tiny, fighter model would be 11.00 pounds!
I would be interested, but now I am not sure. As I understand there will be only three or four ships in the starter set, am I right? How many ships would you need to play a nice battle? How much would you invest in it? Would it be worth it or will it be a game like the WoTC collectible one (Can't remember the name, and it was not as good as I had hoped)?

I have to agree, especially if they are the size of the ones shown in the playtest demos.

Of course, you do get a nice base, with info printed on it, and a fancy maneuver selector widget, as well.

;-)

Tom Reed22 Jun 2012 9:18 a.m. PST

Hmm, Wings of War planes cost about the same and I haven't heard anyone in my neck of the woods complaining about the price for what you get.

Soldat22 Jun 2012 9:48 a.m. PST

All ff games are overpriced.

Grumpy Monkey22 Jun 2012 9:53 a.m. PST

The price seems to be on par, like Tom mentioned they are about the same price as Wings of War with the added bonus of it being Star Wars.

CPBelt22 Jun 2012 10:25 a.m. PST

I thought that they said the ships they used in the demo games we saw online were from the WotC game or something and were only proxies, that the game's real models would be better?

CmdrKiley22 Jun 2012 12:22 p.m. PST

Yeah, seems like it's on par with Wings of War.

I'm sure they included the special base and all the tokens and markers so that it makes it more difficult for players to use their old Micro Machines and SWMB minis.

darthfozzywig22 Jun 2012 12:24 p.m. PST

All ff games are overpriced.

Nonsense.

Mr Elmo22 Jun 2012 1:18 p.m. PST

Perhaps the price thing seems an issue because people want to do battle with like 10 X wings and 30 Tie fighters.

Wings of War is definitely a game where a person controls 1 or 2 models so the model count will be quite low.

Licensing is also an issue. Big Daddy George needs a new pair of shoes!

Mako1122 Jun 2012 3:37 p.m. PST

Yea.

I suspect a lot of proxy minis will be used with this one.

BrotherSevej22 Jun 2012 5:10 p.m. PST

It's a 1 ship 1 player game. Sure you can control more, but the game is designed as 'dogfight simulator', albeit a casual one. So the starter box is playable by 3 and each expansion adds 1, and more pilot choice than you can shake your stick at.

Anyone expexting a mass battle game with 30, 20 or even 10 ships in the game with only two or three players will be disappointed.

kehanubaal22 Jun 2012 5:13 p.m. PST

so you are saying that the game will be similar to WoW? The models look smaller, and, I mean, one thing is to fly the plane of a WWI Ace, another is flying a puny tie fighter of the imperium… don't you think? I either need Darth Vader or scores of tie fighter ;)
(and the models look a lot smaller… from the small pics I saw)

Panzergruppe23 Jun 2012 2:44 a.m. PST

If the models are too small, you could always substitute them for F-Toys 1/144 models

Mako1123 Jun 2012 2:54 p.m. PST

The Titanium diecast models would work well too, as proxies, if you have some of those, or can find them.

I imagine more may be released at some point in the future, if they follow previous marketing plans.

George's gotta pay for the heat for his jacuzzi, somehow.

The answer comes in the form of a question: Will you buy it?

If yes, then no, it is not overpriced… for you.

If no, then it is overpriced… for you.

From FFG's perspective, the question is: Will we sell enough at this price to make the most profit we can make off of this item?

If no, then it is overpriced for their goal.
If yes, then it is priced at their goal.

And the above questions and answers are the only ones that are relevant.

vojvoda25 Jun 2012 7:01 a.m. PST

I will buy it if for nothing to see how they handle Star Wars fighter movements etc.

As for fighters I have Galoob 20mm Ships, Micro Machines, Titanium Series, and SWMB ships. My goal is a large player game of 8 per side each having one or two flights of three ships per flight.

We have several guys in my gaming club with piles of the old Micromachines fleet SW ships (as well as the same scale SW fleet battle cmg ships) so apart from the starter box, and cards for units (I'm sure they'll turn up on the interwebs somewhere), I think we should have it covered.

vojvoda11 Jul 2012 7:38 a.m. PST

I am only interested in the rules and the cards as well. I have about 40 of each type X Wings and Tie Fighters, and a 1/2 dozen or so Tie Advanced and Y Wings, and a few odd oness here and there. In the Galoob (15/20mm) size I have about 24 of each. Talk about Big!

Nonsense.

Agreed (with darthfozzywig). I can't speak to the X-Wing game, but I've found FF to be a stellar company with wonderful games that I'm willing to pay for. It costs a lot of money to produce games of that quality and caliber.

demiurgex29 Jul 2012 8:28 a.m. PST

It looks like one change is that instead of a card based movement system, they've put the movement in a black box.

Basically there's a turnkey, where you put in your speed for that kind of model and it shows you how to move. At least that's what I saw in a demo on youtube – can't find that now (wonder if they told them to take it down).

That was very much a 'prototype'.

There's also a lot of emphasis on the different abilities of the pilots, unlike Wings of War. Not sure how that works yet.
